Greatest Vol NFL player other than

Al Wilson would be close, IMO.

There was a thread on a all SEC board a few months ago asking every SEC fan to put up their best on Mt Rushmore for football....basketball. It was pretty interesting.

Jason Witten
Are we counting NFL too? Witten isn't really close on best TE numbers at UT.

Josh Dobbs has 2nd most total TDs in school history behind Manning.

Henry holds the rushing record, Kent holds the receiving record.

Based on pure talent Pickens was great, only modern day player to have TDs on offense, defense and special teams.

Per the thread title... Yes.

And Jason Witten is the obvious answer. He should be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the first ballot. As far as a best single season is concerned, Jamal Lewis had over 2,000 yards rushing in 2003 with Baltimore and that deserves a mention... but he won't get into the Hall of Fame.

From a sentimental standpoint and playing well above his physical stature, Bill Bates. 15 seasons in the NFL, 2 SB rings, 1 All Pro team. Tom Landry once said, “If we had 11 players on the field who played as hard as Bill Bates does and did their homework like he does, we’d be almost impossible to beat”.[6] He described Bates and Cliff Harris as "the hardest hitters I ever saw." Referring to Bates' reputation as a hard hitter, John Madden stated, "Every game starts with a kick. With Bill Bates on the field, every game begins with a bang!"

This from a long time Steelers fan.

Witten as others stated. You can’t argue with a future HoFer.

After that, it gets to be a better discussion.
Jamal Lewis, had a 2000 yard season
Al Wilson, several pro bowls
Dale Carter, several pro bowls and defensive rookie of year
Anthony Miller, several pro bowls
Terry McDaniel, several pro bowls and one of the best cover corners at his time. I remember him shutting down Jerry Rice when hardly anyone else could
Stanley Morgan, several pro bowls and great career with Patriots

Jason Witten played at Tennessee from 2000 to 2002. In 2000 and 2001, we were mostly just handing the ball off to a Travis. When we did pass, it was to one of the WR's Cedrick Wilson, Donte Stallworth or Kelley Washington. Fulmer was never much on throwing to the TE and you also have to remember Witten came to Tennessee recruited as a DE. So he was always a work in progress while he was here. Witten did have a pretty good season in 2002, though. He caught the game winner vs Arkansas.

Bob Suffridge or Beattie Feathers. Both played for Tennessee in the 1930s and hadn't outstanding NFL careers. In fact, Feathers had the highness yds. per carry for at least 60 years and may still have the record. Of course, Suffridge was the greatest lineman ever to play for Tennessee. Look up their NFL records and you should agree.

Good list. I would also add Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds. He only made the Pro Bowl twice, but he had a 15 year career as a LB and won 2 Super Bowls. Very tough and durable.

I failed to mention him but you are right! He was a little before my time but I remember my folks talking about him.

Charlie Garner, Alvin Harper, Deion Grant, Sean Ellis, Leonard Little, John Henderson, and Carl Pickens had Good pro careers too.
There’s a bunch of OL who could be added... Tim Irwin, Harry Galbreath, Raleigh McKenzie, Chad Clifton, but those guys don’t get fancy stats to look at but all were solid long time vets. Michael Cofer was another that was a beast on the DL

He probably would have had a HoF career if not for that and the cancer.

Yeah, I agree. Had he been able to finish out his prime years of his career (2017 and 2018) similar to his 2015 and 2016 seasons, he likely would have been in HOF discussions.
