Based on Rivals Top 10 In-State Players since 2003 here are the results for where they signed and how their careers have played out.

My view is that the only ones we really missed out on from the Top 10 were

2003 - None
2004 - Tom Santi
2005 - Patrick Turner & Michael Oher
2006 - Graig Cooper
2007 - Golden Tate & Harrison Smith
2008 - Barrett Jones, Don'ta Hightower, Chris Jordan & David Spurlock

I won’t get into how or why we didn’t sign these guys because each one had different reasons but my view is that at least 5 of them wouldn’t have signed with TN even General Neyland was the coach.

7) Tom Santi - Virginia ? productive career at UVA now with Colts
8) Greg Smith - Auburn ? ended up in JUCO
9) Kevin Mainord - South Carolina ? arrested for stealing TV/DVD

2005
1) Patrick Turner - USC ? rated as #1 prospect ? projected mid-late round NFL pick
2) Michael Oher - Ole Miss ? top 10 NFL prospect
7) Barry Turner - Nebraska ? DE starter in 07 ? missed most of 08 due to injury
8) Ayanga Okpokowuruk - Duke ? DT starter for most of career

2006
1) Brandon Warren - Florida State ? transferred to TN
3) Mike Berry - Auburn ? potential starting OG for 09
4) Graig Cooper Miami-FL ? good RB for Canes
5) Tremayne Coger - Alabama ? never played in 2 years and left team
6) Duke Calhoun - Memphis ? backup WR
10) Cecil Frison - Ole Miss

2007
2) Golden Tate ? Notre Dame ? starting WR
3) Alex Watkins - Alabama ? little to no action
4) Rashad Mason- North Carolina ? little to no action
6) John Stokes - Vanderbilt ? starting LB
7) Harrison Smith - Notre Dame ? converted to LB - starter

2008
1) Barrett Jones - Alabama ? backup LT as FR
3) Don'ta Hightower - Alabama ? Freshman AA
4) Curt Phillips - Wisconsin ? may push for starting role in future
5) Chris Jordan - Alabama ? backup LB as FR

Nice find Rex, interesting info.

Who was the biggest miss, on that list?

Oher, Hightower

Adarius Bowman was a player at OKst. He and Patrick Turner were big misses IMO on the WR pos. Hightower does lead the list

Good stuff although Harrison Smith does not start for the Irish. He only plays in certain packages and is said to be moving to safety this year. I think Jordan will end up being one of the best that got away.

I think the biggest misses are Turner, Oher, Willis, Hightower, and Tate.

Also Calhoun has been good with Memphis. Heffner was good at TSU when he wasn't injured. Barry Turner led the nation in sacks as a freshman at Nebraska, but injuries have held him back.

People always say there isn't talent in-state, but a team with Tate, Hightower, Oher, and Turner last year would have improved us drastically, although still no QB.

Tate is a playmaker this team is desperate for on offense right now. He is one heck of a receiver. IMO he was a larger miss than Turner.

Randal Cobb and David Spurlock are 2 guys Fulmer just flat out missed on. They could have easily been Vols.

Harrison started and played more than 80% of the snaps of every game that I watched. Bowman, Cooper, Oher, Tate and Turner would've kept CPF "working like heck" for a long time.

I would rather have Gerald Jones over Tate any day of the week. Tate looks good but he hasn't seen any SEC type defenses. When ND played USC the only team with a defense even close to SEC caliber Tate had 2 catches for 15 yards. Don't get me wrong I wish we could have gotten Tate but I also don't think he was our biggest miss in state.

it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to cite the person who made this list or link to the forum. I see a scenario in the near future where someone comes here and is pissed to see a screen capture of their work without even an informal citation.

I completely agree. I would say looking in retrospect, Willis or Oher might have to be the biggest misses.

That being said, Tate is a playmaker on offense, and outside of Gerald Jones right now, who else do we have? We need speed on offense and that is Tate. Just saying it would be nice to have Tate lining up on the outside.

We could definitely use Tate but hopefully CLK will bring in some speedy wideouts that will make us forget about not having him.

They'll be alright.

#22 for Notre Dame - weak side LB - the Irish play on NBC some and my wife lets me watch occassionaly. I agree with you that the players that will be brought in will make us not care as much about missing out on most of the in state players that we have missed on. But Harrison started last year and is moving back to Safety this upcoming year.

you can say Oher was a "miss" but I'm pretty sure he's one of these 5

but my view is that at least 5 of them wouldn’t have signed with TN even General Neyland was the coach.

I asked my dad who is a booster and season ticket holder and he said Smith did not start until mid season at LB. He said he will however start next year in Bruton's place. I would have loved to get Smith but I think we all agree Berry was first priority in that class. I am just glad we got Gordon this year, I think he would have been a huge in state miss.

Oh and you were right he did start just not all year. I though for some reason he only came in on certain D packages.
