One of your fans made a good point on another board and I kind of agree. It's good for your players that you had a nailbiter like this because it puts things a little more in perspective and should help them focus on every game. I dont know if UT was overlooking UAB or not, but it is a lesson learned I believe.
I was in the stands in 1975 when we lost to N. Texas, and in 76 when we lost to Duke, and I was in the Liberty bowl when we lost to Memphis in 96.
On any given Saturday .... blah blah blah ..
But, what happened today shows the great gulf that separates the haves and the have-nots.
We played what will probably be our worst game of the season. When all is said and done, this game may well be the highlight of the UAB season.
Yet we still won.
I don't hate the mid-majors, I just don't like playing them for all the above reasons.
We were getting beat like we stole something. We had nothing to gain by winning this game. I just literally hate these games.
See, I'm an old fart. OK, I admitted it. For 25 years I have been preaching to anyone and everyone who would listen that we need a Super Conference, a conference made up of aprox. 50 to 70 teams that would eliminate all of the need to play games like this one today. Instead of moving closer to that we're moving towards football welfare where teams are trying to force matchups because of politics. Memphis/UT, UAB/Bama, etc., and then they've successfully forced games like Pitt/Utah, which neither team deserved to be in the Fiesta. We all know there were better teams left out than Pitt and Utah. Another issue though .... Pitt got in because everyone good left the BE, and Utah because the BCS caved to the threat of the Senate Oversight Committee.
In reality what was accomplished in the game today?
We won the game. UAB won a moral victory. Nothing was really changed by it. Everyone knows that the talent levels on the first teams are not that far apart but the depth is a huge difference, and depth is what wins games.
You've always, I think, misunderstood some of my comments about mid-majors. They play some nice ball. I'll go even further, I love it all.
My cousin coached the Sewanee Tigers for about 25 years and I watched them play many games.
I used to love the MTSU Raiders, and have watched them play several times.
I love all football but my desire has always been that every game played should be against opponents of equal or near equal talent.
I want OOC games between UT and UCLA, Alabama and Penn St., Florida and Michigan. Instead, we, the fans are served up a regular dish of UAB/UT where the middy has everything to gain and the major has nothing to gain and everything to lose. It usually provides one of two things. It is a lopsided blowout or a game that really doesn't show the true differences in the teams. If you put FL orange and blue on UAB and stuck them in the Swamp this Saturday, we'd probably beat them 4 tds.
I just find it nonsensical to play these sort of games.
My dream of the Super C will never materialize, but it is my dream.
