With all the firepower on offense, it was truly disgusting watching the App State embarrassment. I know Butch had to be shocked as were the 100,00 plus paying fans. Someone please tell Deboring that it is 2016, not 1985. If VT ends up with a win over UT, and the Vols look like crap again offensively, DeBord needs to hit the road and Butch needs to go with him for making such a bonehead decision to hire DeStupid in the first place.:thud:

I'm all for raising pitchforks and walking around the square when the coaches give a bad performance--they're big boys, and make plenty of $$ for their trouble. But to call them out in such a gratuitously insulting and belittling manner is just childish.

Sorry, just think you coulda made your point in a more civilized fashion.

About 11:30 Saturday night, your woe is me, hand wringing, sad singing, flower bringing mind set will change. You're gonna see a different team that will not be a basic, but complex in their attack. It will be fine, we just need to stop, breath, and relax. Now, go get some coffee.

DeBord did nothing like 1985. If so, the Vols would have pounded App St into the dirt.....

I actually wish he would coach like a grandpa. Line up with these running backs, give them a lead blocker, and run it down opponents throats....

Let's see some play action. Throw in the wrinkles of the zone read and option.

I say get more grandpa. Because now we have grandpa trying to call plays to Butch's nonsensical BS offense. Problem with Butch's nonsensical offense, is that it doesn't have an identity. They know not what they are doing....

There's room for criticism in civil conversation. You don't have to drop it to the level of children in the schoolyard to make your point.

Well........the OP did call him grandpa so maybe the OP is not that old....

Do you always go around bullying little children?

Well........the OP also called Coach Jones, Butch. Everyone loves and respects grandpa's, so this is about looking to leadership for accountability.

Much of Game 1's issues was a result of poor blocking from upper-teenagers/low-20-somethings on the OL, so hopefully that group gets it together moving fwd.

Yeah, DeBord is awful. Last year he helped lead the Vols to the 2nd best rushing and scoring offense in UT history.

The only thing that shocked Butch was how bad the oline played.

Some of you on here think you are more important than you really are.

If you are that good of a coach - then send in your resume - I'm sure all these college football teams would love to have you join the staff.

Most days I think this board should be renamed to "anti" volnation.

You really think Butch didn't know the offensive gameplan and which plays were on the call sheet to be called?

No worries on the OL this week - they got this.

The most startling aspect of a poor performance on offense by the Volunteers in last week's season-opening overtime win against Appalachian State was the play up front, and the line will need to be much improved for Tennessee to knock off Virginia Tech in the "Battle at Bristol" on Saturday night.

On Wednesday, offensive coordinator Mike DeBord indicated the line was inconsistent during preseason practice, and those problems spilled over into the season opener.

"It seems like we'll go out and have a really good practice and guys will execute well, then we have one where we don't do as well," DeBord said. "We've been inconsistent that way. We've just got to become a consistent offensive unit. I know our guys are working at it. I know our offensive line was disappointed in the way they played this past week, and we've got really good character kids up there and they're going to do everything in their power to improve that."

The inability to open up running lanes or protect quarterback Josh Dobbs hamstrung the rest of the offense. Tennessee played behind the chains due to struggles on first down and faced an average of more than 8 yards to go on 16 third downs. The Vols had opportunities to make plays to open receivers downfield, but protection breakdowns ruined them.

Entering the season, concerns centered around tackles Drew Richmond and Brett Kendrick, but the struggles of center Coleman Thomas and guards Dylan Wiesman and Jashon Robertson against the Mountaineers were unexpected. In addition to losing one-on-one matchups, the line's physicality was not good enough.

"We need to become tougher that way," DeBord said.

Some reports after the game indicated Thomas was dealing with an ankle injury, but on Wednesday, Tennessee coach Butch Jones downplayed that and said Thomas had returned to full strength.

Jones said the offensive line has stepped up to meet the coaching staff's challenges this week.

Not sure CJF is completely bought in just yet -

The Vols' struggles haven't caused Virginia Tech to relax.

"I'm sure they didn't score as many points as they'd like," Hokies first-year coach Justin Fuente said on the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches teleconference. "The bottom line is they found a way to win the game. I think Appalachian State is better than anybody gives them credit for. I think Tennessee would probably vouch for that, too.

"When you watch them on film, they've got good football players and a good scheme and certainly do a good job. My kind of first take from watching Tennessee on offense are all the weapons they have. Obviously their tailback (Jalen Hurd) stands out. He is a large, athletic, downhill runner. Boy, he's a good football player, and they've got weapons on the outside and they seem to be pretty big and athletic up front. All of that combined with a dual-threat quarterback, so there is plenty to say grace over when you watch their offense."

Instead of judging his offense on an entire year... One of the best offensive years we have ever had, you choose to babble and throw a fit over a single game in which we used about 1/3 of the playbook..... Makes sense

Our pass game has sucked since Butch walked on campus. 2 qb's and 2 OC's have both been unable to solve the riddle of our pass game.

Do you really think it's DeBord?

It's the QB's. They have been unable to complete a ball to the receivers in stride consistently.

The obvious reason that the pass game has been lacking is because we have had a terrible offensive line and seems that we still do
