Gran - In like Flynn (Pahokee)

I got a real slow load, so I'm gonna go ahead and paste the story..

The ongoing tension between the University of Tennessee and Pahokee High School seems to be easing.

Two weeks after UT running backs coach Eddie Gran was asked to leave the South Florida high school, he is expected to attend practice there today (Tuesday), a source close to the situation said.

And he’s not going alone.

According to the source, Gran will attend the practice at Pahokee with Henry Crawford Jr., the town’s vice mayor.

Neither Crawford nor Gran could be reached for immediate comment Tuesday morning.

The problems began after the Vols signed Pahokee wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson, who had been previously committed to Florida before the Vols changed his mind shortly before signing day.

During a recruiting celebration with boosters, UT coach Lane Kiffin said that he had Richardson fax his letter of intent from the middle school so no one at Pahokee would “screw it up.”

Kiffin later apologized for those and other comments about Pahokee, saying they weren’t meant to offend and he did not realize media were present when those comments were made.
All appeared fine until Pahokee High School principal Ariel Alejo asked Gran to leave the school May 4.

Gran, who recruits South Florida for UT, was in town to attend the school’s spring practice and evaluate prospects, although assistant coaches are prohibited by NCAA rules from visiting with prospects themselves during the spring evaluation period.

The Vols have already offered a scholarship to at least five rising seniors at Pahokee, a school that traditionally produces several major college prospects each year.
More later online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.

Lets hope the vice mayor is doing this for the right reason and it's not discovered later that he is a UT grad with the UT logo on his web page.......:eek:hmy:..........:)

Two men acting like mature adults? What a bizarre concept for college football. Maybe the media will pick up the story, if they can figure it out how to explain it.

I suspect there has been quite a bit of activity behind the scene on this one. It is very interesting how UT coaches are now welcome at the school when only a week ago the principal was demanding some ridiculous public apology. It’s good to see the more pragmatic minds in the Florida Department of Education have prevailed.

Does anyone else think that by bringing the vice mayor is a major plus for our recruiting down there? To me, that move will show the kids we have some pull and respect. I mean if city council members are taking the time to escort our staff, some kids have to think that the University of Tennessee doesn't play around. JMO.

It can't hurt, but I wonder what kind of kid is influenced by the vice mayor. (Excepting of course the vice mayor's kid).

Well since Pahokee is such a small town (that's how it has been portrayed by the media) everyone has to know who the vice-mayor is...right?

I am thinking more of the overall impression that it leaves. I would venture to guess that not many schools' recruiting staff members get the vice mayor to come down to watch a high school football practice with them. This makes a statement that the city of Pahokee doesn't hate the University of Tennessee and it is welcomed down there. So I would say the kind of kid that would be influenced by this is a kid that wants to go to a school that has a good reputation nationally and within their community.
