Grading all the head coaching hires from the 2017 carousel

We’d better not be! The “new sheriff in town” at the better schools in the SEC, will traditionally see an upswing in recruiting in his first 2 years (new coach, new attitude, new system, offering early plaiting time, etc.). By year 3, if you’re not winning, recruiting can start to tail off.

No doubt, he’s on the road, working like hell, trying to get in the mix for a lot of top players. But, until he lands them and puts us in the top 10, I’d hestitate to say, “recruiting like a beast.” We’re at #17 right now, so he has a shot.

I’ve posted this before. Here’s why I don’t want to overrate Pruitt’s recruiting abilities:

2013 at FSU - #1 in the nation.

2014 at UGA - #36 in the nation, Thigpen (#10) and Gillespie (#28) rated higher at Tennessee.

2015 at UGA - #37 in the nation, Stripling (#15), Elder (#19), and Thigpen (#24) rated higher at Tennessee.

2016 at Alabama - #71 in the nation. Thigpen (#34) and Gillespie (#64) rated higher at Tennessee.

2017 at Alabama - #149 in the nation. 6 Tennessee coaches rated higher.

I’m behind CJP 100%, Just saying, while recruiting for some top programs, he’s definitely trending in the wrong direction.

Ranking recruiters is a pretty difficult job. A lot of recruits seem like they are never given a primary recruiter on 247. Also many recruits, especially high ranking recruits, get several recruiters that recruit them. If I am guessing for the declining numbers, head coaches recognized Pruitts ability to close with high caliber recruits so they moved him into a role where he was maybe not a primary recruiter for as many players, but was able to develop relationships with a wider network of recruits and then stay along to all the important visits with the recruits primary recruiters.

Grades here are relative to expectations / reality.

UF and UT both fell WAY further down than either expected. aTm and UCLA both wanted to play big boy ball and went for the two best guys on the market.

However, let’s check back in in two years and see what each coaches record is at their new schools. Hopefully Pruitt is the dark horse and is making some noise nationally.

We may have ended up "down the list" so to speak, but I feel pretty happy with the hire seeing what he did with the staff.

People will try to grade CJP all this coming season and after this season but that's actually pretty dumb and unrealistic.

Changing our O and D completely, especially to a 3-4, will take time and kids recruited to fit the specific type of players needed for every position.

We now have good coaches that will teach the kids how to play their position the right ways but some positions simply take longer than others to get the guys playing really well.

It's going to take a few years of solid recruiting to turn this player roster over and get the right type of players for every position and try to build solid depth too.

I can't count this recruiting class against CJP because he's had so little time to try to build a solid recruiting class.

In recruiting nowdays I'm amazed that coaches offer kids a scholly in 9th or 10th grade just to try to get in with them faster and have much more time to make friends with the kid and his family.

It's normal to work on a kid and his family for 2 years or longer so in retrospect I'd have to give CJP and his staff a pass on this recruiting class even though, so far, they've done a excellent job.

The only fair way to grade CJP and his staff is to wait until he has 3 years of HIS recruited players on the field.

I still expect to see improvements as we go along each year.

I don't expect to see magic though.

Consistent improvement is expected and should be demanded.

VFL...GBO!!!

Now, that was the real head scratcher. My neighbor is a FSU grad, and she is real happy because they were tired of Jimbo. Who knew Taggart was such a star? I don't get it!

I agree with your neighbor. If Jimbo is so good, why did FSU stink it up this last year? Saban hasn't had a bad year since his first at Bama, and that was 7-6.

$75 million guaranteed, and he might be over the hill. Of course I could be wrong - he does have a pretty good track record.

I know this, if UT had entered that deal, ticket prices would go up.
