Tennessee – Jeremy Pruitt (B-)

Like Mississippi State, the Vols’ grade was affected half a letter due to the way the hiring process was handled. Tennessee’s grade dropped instead of getting better. The mess of a search aside, the Volunteers made a quality hire in Pruitt. A hard line figure who comes from Nick Saban’s tree, Pruitt is the type of disciplinarian who will get the Volunteers on message quickly. Pruitt is also one of the nation’s top recruiters and a great geographic fit for Knoxville. It’s always a risk for a program of Tennessee’s level to hire a first-time head coach. But considering how the search went at the beginning, the Vols did very well to land Pruitt.

Florida targeted Chip Kelly, then Scott Frost, then settled for Mullen. There were possibly even others targeted. Half their fanbase sighed in response to hiring Mullen. Not sure how that's rated an A. Don't get me wrong I think it's a decent hire. An A? No.

What the heck did Currie's screw ups have to do with Fulmer hiring Pruitt. Shouldn't affected Pruitt's grade any at all.

It goes to the program's national perception. And if it has to be explained why that is not all that great right now, you really need to get your head outta your redneck butt.

Willie Taggart hire got an A? LOL!

Now, that was the real head scratcher. My neighbor is a FSU grad, and she is real happy because they were tired of Jimbo. Who knew Taggart was such a star? I don't get it!

You telling someone off, and at the same time have "leave Holly alone" under your screen name, says it all. The man was defending our new coaching hire and you felt it appropriate to call him out. You need to get your head out and let the sunshine in dude.

Lets grade them in 4 years. Will be interesting.

Look at the Coaching Staff as a whole and consider recruiting abilities, development abilities, etc...we should be Top3 with the only hit being a lack of HC experience.

Probably would get an A if we had 3rd eye blind Schiano.

It’s like having that math teacher that wants you to write out how you got the answer. Why does it matter as long as I got the right answer? The hiring process shouldn’t be a part of the grading, the only thing that matters is who we got. Nobody knows how these coaches are going to do anyways. Chip Kelly could flop. Dan Mullen could flop. Jimbo could flop.

How do you accurately grade a guy prior to coaching their first game?

Just another article for fans to talk about.

Agree. Why ding Pruitt because of the hiring process? Let Pruitt and others coach a game/season before you attach a grade. Nothing to see here....move on.

Pruitt is an A+ compared to Schiano. These offseason articles are just speculation and attempts to get clicks. Gotta make money somehow as a sportswriter.

That's like the teach dropping you a half letter because they don't like the way you study. Means nothing. I would rate CJP as a B+ to A- with what we have seen so far.

How do you grade a coaching hire before they ever coach? Pruitt could be an F or a A+ but let’s wait until 2020 to grade him.

Why is Pruitt being graded based on HOW he was hired? Makes no sense.
