Grades from Brutal 5 Game Stretch:

1. Florida -- Line: Florida -4. Prediction: We expected a nail biter that could go either way. Result: A 47-21 loss that was not indicative of how relatively even the two teams were due to 6 turnovers from the Vols. Grade: D

2. Georgia -- Line: Georgia -30.5 Prediction: Honestly, we just hoped we could keep it somewhat competitive and not get blown out on national TV. Result: The Vols hung in for 3.5 quarters, and made Georgia sweat just a bit in the second half. Grade: B+

3. Auburn -- Line: Auburn -15.5 Prediction: Confidence was gained in the UGA game, and coming off a bye week and playing a Noon kick game, we thought that if we played well we could give Auburn a run for their money on the Plains. Result: We played our best game to date, won all three phases and took home a great win. Grade: A

4. Alabama -- Line: Alabama -29.5 Prediction: Emotions were high with CJP facing his former team, and the return of CBJ to Neyland Stadium. We knew it would be a tough row to hoe, but thought if we played our best we could make Alabama uncomfortable for a half or so. Result: Alabama proved again why they are the best team in the country, but the Vols fought for 4Qs even when the score was out of hand. Grade: C

5. South Carolina -- Line: South Carolina -9.5 Prediction: Despite being a heavy road dog, coming off playing a physical game against the #1 team in the world, and South Carolina having the benefit of a bye week to prepare and an electric environment of a their first home night game of the year, the Vols felt confident the game would be a coin flip. Result: Tennessee outplayed South Carolina for 3 quarters, but didn't make as many plays in crunch time as the Gamecocks. Grade: B+

Overall Grade for Brutal 5 Game Stretch: We were only less than a touchdown underdog in one game, and played three on the road. Even stealing one win is impressive, but hanging in against Georgia and having South Carolina on the ropes puts the grade in "Good" territory. Grade: B

So 1-5 gets you a “B”, huh?

1-4*. And when you are ranked #56 in the FPI, and four of the teams are ranked in the top 18, and the other is ranked 35th, and three of the games are on the road, then yes 1-4, including a tough 4Q game against FPI #3 on the road, and outplaying #35 on the road when they have a bye week and you are coming off of playing Alabama, gets a B. At least in my book it does.

I can understand why you *might* give SCar a B+ (more like a C+), but can't for the life of me think of any reason to rate our performance vs UGA as a B+. Not sure why you'd give Bama a C grade either. This is a terrible grading system even for VN standards.

So in other words, you have no idea what you're doing.

Florida, Bama and South Carolina are F's in my opinion.

Florida was no doubt. I actually think it was worse than that. There was absolutely no excuse for that. None.

Lol, I know I'm the only that cares, but Jeremy is lucky I'm such a forgiving man after that mess.

Florida (F-) Team was sloppy and not well prepared. I'd give a lower grade if I could
Georgia (C) Team fought in second half but can't give more than a C
Auburn (A) An SEC road win against a non bottom team gets an A
Alabama (C-) Bama does this to everyone but team looked ill prepared early on. By time the team got adjusted, was down 28-0
South Carolina (C-) Team looked sloppy but had chance to win

Overall grade: C-

We blew a 2 touchdown lead vs Carolina. Both sides of the ball collapsed in the 2nd half.

We should have won that game.

That’s D material.

We also built a two touchdown lead. Losing by 3 at South Carolina without our best player is not D material at this point.

Pick your our own grade if you want.

Blown 2 TD lead is a D for this team.

If we were a competent team the grade would be an F.

Most people outside of our fan base expected us to get our ass kicked in all 5 games. We only really got our ass kicked once...we gave Fla the game and gassed out against SC(painfully obvious to those who watched and pay attention to body language) like a few worries we would. All in all, for a team projected to be terrible before the season started, we're better than expected. We are A LOT better than we were last year, it's actually encouraging imo.

So you give no credit to anyone for taking a 2 touchdown lead on a team favored by 9.5? Seems reasonable. Not euphemistic at all.

In all candor, I expected this 5 game run to be hopeless and 0-5. Anyone who expected better was watching football through very orange tinted lenses in my opinion. I incorrectly expected 3 of the 5 games to be absolute blowout losses (Georgia, Auburn and Alabama). I thought, correctly, that Florida is much farther along than the Volunteers and it showed. I thought we might be competitive with SC, unless the prior 4 games left us destroyed. To some extent the collapse on Saturday was related to the prior 4 games and a lack of depth. The team looked both brain and leg dead at times. Not surprised by the close loss. Not happy--but not surprised.

Overall, the Vols got through this gauntlet better than I expected or hoped. The Georgia, Auburn and SC games give me hope for the last 4 games and, overall, this team appears to me to be improving. The 2018 Vols are much better than the train wreck of 2017. This staff is doing a good job with the players they have to work with and the players are playing with effort. I couldn't say that last year. I honestly don't think we'll make a bowl game this year. I think we'll finish with 5 wins. I do think they'll win 8 next year, maybe more if they can get some linemen ready to play and get some more speed and smarts into the secondary.

Uhhh my guy, you dont blow a 12 point lead to Scar and get a B

If it is true that our players were truly gassed, due to lack of quality depth, then I could easily go with a B. I could not give a higher grade though, because some of S.C.'s success running was earlier in the game. You have to give a great deal of credit for getting the lead on the road in the SEC though.
