Government Jobs

From what I understand it's highly competitive and not a job you're gonna get right out of college. FBI requires 3 years professional experience and a lot of their agents have JD's.

How easy is it to get on at the FBI, DEA, ATF, or TBI with a criminal justice degree?

Extremely competitive. Sometimes there are some arbitrary physical requirements. If you just have a bachelor's, you should check and see about getting a more advanced degree to help your chances.

Good luck with the fbi.

Well I'm still a senior in high school so I haven't even started college yet. I'm just trying to figure out how hard it is to be hired with them and things you can do while in school to help get you hired on after you graduate.

And I should say I realize you won't get hired on to places like this right after college.

Then you're in good position to make things happen. Make great (not good, great) grades in undergrad, find the appropriate master's you need for what you want to do with them, and set yourself up with internships and a good "experience job" when you finish up.

You have a blank slate right now, just gotta make it happen.

Keep in good shape. How tall are you? For some field agent things, they want you within 2 inches of 6 feet, plus or minus. Or at least used to.

I'm 5'11, skinny as a rail though. I do lift weights regularly with a friend trying to get bigger and stronger.

Good height. Totally normal to be skinny coming out of HS.

I don't know if they even do that size restriction stuff any more, but they used to for certain positions.

Thats the truth, the only reason I got hired at the golf course I work at.

You have plenty of time and opportunities to get to know the right people. Hit the internships early and hard in college. Knowing what you want to do now gives you an advantage over most other folks your age.

You should note that the extensive background check will include the government interviewing people you forgot you even knew. Make good decisions or give a fake name..:)

If I do end up needing a fake name, I think I'll go with Billy Costigan :)

Join ROTC, graduate, get assigned in the Chesapeake region, serve your commitment (or two), you are a shoe in.

Joining the FBI is simple as a concept...

- Be damned good at what you do
- Have an immaculate track record

The level of detail they go into for background checks for gov't jobs where clearance is needed is incredible.

If you want to work with the FBI and are good with numbers get an accounting degree.

A girl that interned with us started out right out of grad school working with the FBI making close to six figures, and she by no means was brilliant.
