“I thought B.J. played really well, did a really good job, pushed Jonathan (Crompton) and played better than Jonathan in the scrimmage,” Kiffin said.

That's all I needed to hear dog!

I love how blunt and honest Kiffin is. He may be leaning toward Crompton, but he's simply just like "Coleman played better than him in the scrimmage." Calls them like he sees them.

well clearly this quote shows he will be our QB for the next 3 years. Congrats BJ

This quote means that Kiffin is letting it known there is no clear starter. Which is good and bad. I hope someone takes the torch and keeps it.

I'm glad to see that BJ is competing with JC for the starting position. I honestly don't feel comfortable with JC starting, unless he has competed for the job and i'm glad that he is getting some competition.

On a side note, is Nick still hurt? I figured he would at least be in the running, but I haven't heard much about him.

Here's a quote from the 4/8/09 edition of the Chattanooga Times Free Press:

Nick Stephens still isn’t 100 percent back from a fractured throwing wrist, but he’s practiced since last week and hopes to scrimmage Friday.

“I’m going to finish out this spring, the spring game and everything, and I’m going to finish out strong,” Stephens said. “That was the reason we decided it would be best for me to sit out Saturday.”

Kiffin hasn’t placed a timetable on naming a starter, and Stephens maintained that he’ll get a “full shot” to win the job.

“We haven’t really talked about that much, but I would expect that it’s going to go through fall camp,” Stephens said. “ I would expect all three of us to just keep battling hard, keep working hard and keep fighting for the job.”

I think Kiffin is playing mind games with them and seeing who can stand up under the pressure. The qb position has to step it up this season lets see who breaks away from the pack.

Sorry but this really isn't good news. UT has three very average QB's that cannot seperate themselves from one another which only adds to the complication.

entirely true. Me, I would have Cropton for one last year, then find me Peyton Manning's long lost cousin.

Exactly. He's pretty obviously trying to see who cracks. BJ took a step forward. We'll see how Crompton responds.

If BJ wins the job it could hurt the recruitment of a top shelf QB next year but he seems like a kid you'd want good things to happen for.

I hadn't really thought about it but the way this sets up is like a mini-tournament. Either BJ or JC will eliminate the other this spring then battle NS for the starting job. His injury almost gave him a bye.

In practice, Stephens looked like he was throwing tighter spirals than the other two.

I said this before spring practice started and I am sticking to it. Nick Stephens will be the starting QB this year, IMO.

Coleman is already playing better than Crompton in live game situations, according to Saturdays scrimmage. Stephens was clearly the better player on the field last year, when him and Crompton were taking turns. Kiffin likes what he see's in Stephens and he has been extremely limited. Kiffin kept Stephens out of the scrimmage Saturday for a reason. He doesn't want to take any chances on him getting the wrist hurt again and he wanted him to have a few more days off to rehab so he can finish the last couple of weeks of spring practice near full speed. I think Stephens will win the job.

Kind of like the walk on pushing for the starting center job....

I like Stephens for downfield passing, competitive fire and can even run a wee bit. Hopefully a year will have made a difference in maturity and attitude ... the new staff will not tolerate any bad behavior.

It seems like Kiffen is going to wait until he can get a clear picture of what NS has to offer before he names the starter. If he thought it was going to be one of the others I think he would have already named a starter so they could get the additional reps which would also help the rest of the O.

I'm sure that we are going to sign some 5-star top 5 QB next year. I would be shocked if BJ Coleman is our QB for next three years.

If BJ wins the job and plays well enough to be considered the established starter then I don't think UT will sign a 5* QB next year. If he doesn't play just heads and shoulders above the other two then doubtful he'll start this year and probably ever barring injury.
