Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

This picture taken in October 1966 is looking south at UT's Golf Range Apartments. At the top of the photo is Kingston Pike and Western Plaza Shopping Center, with the Kingston Pike Center on the top right. On the right, the back two rows of the Knoxville Drive-In can be seen.

I’m not seeing the basketball court that I played on a lot 20 years later. I can’t tell if it’s hidden in a shadow, was sliced off of the middle courtyard and paved, or if it replaced a building or two.

The long building with the white roof in the upper right is the Ice Chalet. It looks longer in that 1966 picture. I think it’s the angle of the aerial pic and the building now has an addition along the north east portion.
And near the Ice Chalet, wasn't there a German restaurant? I always wanted to eat there, but don't think I ever did, before it went away. 🤔

The Rathskeller was across the parking lot and at the rear of Western Plaza.

On the upper level of Western Plaza was a Kroger (far eastern end) and an A&P not far from the Kroger. The Fresh Market is pretty much in the A&P spot. Just south of there was a barber shop down an outdoor corridor. Mom took me there every other Friday to get my hair cut.

There was a Revco or SuperX drug store between the two grocery stores. And my favorite store was also between A&P and Kroger as well. Stocked up on baseball cards, comic books, Match Box cars, and gold fish at the Woolworth’s. Also at Easter live chicks that were dyed various colors.
