Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

A rare view of Eddie Young's Gas Station on Kingston Pike in the Bearden area of Knoxville, Tennessee. This Kodachrome 16mm home movie was taken by a tourist passing through town sometime during the early 1960s.Music: Knoxville, My Hometown - The Elm Hill Singers (circa 1964)Film transfer by Sam Hall

The railroad bridge remains unchanged. Apparently, It will be there clogging up everything till the end of time. Roaches, Cher and this bridge in the end.

this is quite a trip for me
My last extended stay in Knoxville was in summer of 71 and wasn't able to get back home frequently until 1980. I founf the Worlld's Fair guide last year during a toss-out splurge, but Mrs AV saved it from the recycle bini

Have not seen all the photos yet, having stopped at the feed-the-bears shot

Might be a little further than you want to drive, but I’ve never been disappointed at Nick and J’s

There aren't many.

Amber Restaurant in Halls is locally-owned. It's good. The original owners retired last year after 47 years, but the restaurant reopened under new (family) ownership.

Rami's Cafe in north Knoxville is quite good for breakfast too.

Of course, there's Pete's Coffee Shop downtown. Under new ownership as of last year, but not much has changed.

Who remembers the old time and temperature telephone number?

We all had it memorized back in the day.
637-2121. When I was a kid, we were in White Stores on Clinton highway and the guy who recorded the time and temp was in front of us at the checkout. The cashier got him to give a time and temp update as he was checking out and it blew my mind.

Hurley, where on Clinton Hwy was the White Store located? We had some discussion about this last year. I thought it was on the corner of Merchants and Clinton across Merchants from where the Walgreens is now. TGO thought it was somewhere else on Clinton.

That’s it. And such a cool story and memory.

It's pretty much where the Food City is now in the old K-Mart shopping center.
