I'm looking to upgrade my irons. I've played some older Callaway X-12s for about 9-10 years and would like something a little more playable, but still not so tight as a true blade.

I demo'd the Taylor Made r7 TP, Ping i10, and Callaway X-20 Tour irons today. I hit them all pretty well, but I think I like the way the r7s set up. The thin top line resembles a more traditional club, but they are still pretty forgiving.

My goal is to improve toward shooting upper 70's/low 80's this year.

Any thoughts?

Honestly, I don't think it really matters as long as whatever set of irons you pick meets your specs as far as lie, shaft flex etc. Just find something you like and get them in the right "flavor".

Getting into the 70s is about having a serviceable short game and avoiding disasters.

If you like the thin top line, try the Mizuno MP 57's or MP 60's.
You get the look and feel of a blade, with the forgiveness of a cavity back.

I play the MP 32's and love them

Been playing the PING EYE2 Black dots for a while and they are pure irons for over 10 years and would not trade those in. Great irons, especially if you could find a copper set of them.

Agreed 100% i play Ping Eye2 blacks as well and they are still more solid than anything iv ever hit, that includes r7s, Titleist and some Callaways that iv hit out of friends bags... Iv got a one inch extension in mine and i love it, allows me the power I need with out swinging out my ass(I still do sometimes)... I still no a few of people that use them, including a golf pro... All around great club!

If you like the R7 TP and it fits your eye, get a set spec'd out for you and roll with 'em.

I'm with GAVol about moving into the 70s, it's about short game work, improving misses and limiting disasters.

I mulled over it and hit them again today before deciding on the r7 TP. I also got fitted and had to have my irons bent 1 degree upright. I never knew that I was "toe-heavy," but the tape don't lie. That actually explains my tendency to push and fade my long irons, I guess.

Will report back after the first couple of outings! (but I'll do so in the Golf forum).

Thanks, guys.

I recently purchased the r7 TPs after years of playing Hogans and I can honestly say it's the best equipment purchase I've ever made.....it's all in what suits your eye and feels good in your hands....if the r7 TPs fit that bill for you then I highly advise pulling the trigger on a new set.

I play with Titleist DCI irons. I love 'um. Great feel, good sweet spot.

I like Pings too, but they are sometimes too "clunky" to swing; this holds especially true for the short game.

Others the check out: Taylor Made, Cleveland (great wedges) and King Cobra.

In the end, like RockyTop said, it's all about what flavor you dig.

Everybody that can play and would like to get better, but hasn't been on the lie board, needs to get there asap.
