"Melvin really looked bad yesterday (Sunday) in practice," head coach Bruce Pearl said following Monday's workout. "His numbers were awful. He was completely off. He was a little better today."

That means Golden probably will be in the starting lineup Wednesday night when the Vols tip it up in a venue widely regarded as the Mecca of college basketball.

I thought everyone was saying Goins was going to be the big suprise of this season. I am sure Golden is going to be great, but you with what they were saying, I was looking forward to Goins really coming thru.

From what I have seen so far though, Trae Golden is going to be a solid player.

This game is going to really challenge Golden's abilities. Tough team to play against with a freshman guard bringing up the ball against a press for 40 minutes. Should be interesting though...

He may not start, but surely Goins will play.

Solid PG will be necessary. I go to Wake, and VCU destroyed us with their press. After the loss of Tony Chennault, we have no true PG. We may find out soon our best PG is a walk-on.

Melvin's body language during the Belmont game really worried me. He never seemed in the game mentally and was really just lackadaisical. After a very poor play, Melvin was Substituted out and he headed straight for the trainers. At the time I thought he was just embarrased of his play up to this point in the game and was trying to use an injury as his excuse.

When Melvin never returned to the game and was listed as out for the Missouri State game I began to get a little worried. Does anyone know if this injury was a nagging problem he suffered in practice or did it happen during the game, because I never saw a moment where it appeared he became injured until he was on the sideline.

Now we are unsure if his poor production in practice is related to injury, effort or some other more personal reasons. I certainly hope Melvin isn't "shipping it in" sort of speak. This team really needs as much solid ball handling and distributing as it can get.

Uhh, he had a concussion from taking an elbow to the dome. He'll be fine once he gets back to being 100% healthy.

Yes. Goins is still hurting.

The problem is with, and only with, the injury. Nothing to do with attitude or ability.

That's what I thought...did not understand the flow of the thread. I personally thought that Goins played really well and was a floor leader in the previous games. :hi:

I was unaware he suffered a concussion, but it would make perfect sense considering the symptoms match what I saw from him.

During the game the announcers said it looked like it was his back and post game pearl's comments were as follows
""Belmont is a good basketball team. I thought we did a pretty good job of being in control of the game most of the way. Our second-half defense kept us in it. We were tentative to close it out. Melvin Goins was hurt in the game Friday night against Chattanooga and did not practice Sunday. He felt a lot better Monday and went today. He re-aggravated it. He got hit in the side and it bent him over double. So he was out. So you have your senior point guard on the sidelines and your freshman point guard in Trae Golden having to kind of close the show"

I am not doubting you, I just don't see in that comment how it would pertain to a concussion, especially the re-aggrevating part.

i really think trae golden is going to be a good point guard. he looks like he handles transition better than goins. i would push it a bit more with trae running the point.
