What is the best way to Athens? We were considering an overnight stay in Atlanta, but it looks out of the way. What route do you guys take to athens?

There's a road that is a straight shot from I-85 directly into Athens. I can't remember the name, but there's an exit off of 85 near Atlanta that will take you directly to UGA.

That would be Highway 316.

75 to 285 to 85, then either off at 316 or on to 129 or 441. 316 is the most direct route, and I imagine tolerable for a basketball game. It can be a NIGHTMARE in football game traffic.

Like Auburn, Athens is stuck in the middle of nowhere without an adjacent interstate. Like I said, you'll probably be fine on 316 with the smaller crowd.

Never been there, is it comparable to Bristol after a race? (Not the same amount of people but you get what I'm saying)

After a football game it gets pretty backed up, but basketball, I doubt you'll even have to slow down.

This is good advice. Given that the game is on a Saturday, traffic on 316 shouldn't be a problem. To clarify:

I-75 South to
I-285 East to
I-85 North to
Hwy 316 to Athens.

If coming from K-town, this seems way out of the way. And I would not want to have to drive on 3 different interstates through/around Atlanta, especially on a friday afternoon.

Trust me. Even with the traffic, the interstate is the only way to go. The cross country route takes forever.

I have lived in Forsyth County in Alpharetta so I know the ATL area reasonably well. However I have never had to travel to Athens from Knoxville. What would you have to say about taking I-40 west, getting off after going through the Mtns and then taking Hwy 23/441 south straight into Athens? This is definitely a more direct path but I have never drove on 441 so I am not sure what type of road it is. Divided Hwy or 2 lane? Thanks for any help.

If you've got time and want a scenic drive, go for it. 441 from Clayton, GA to Athens is pretty much 4 lane all the way and is an easy road to drive. It's probably 1 1/2 hours from the GA/NC line to Athens. It's the drive from I-40 across the mountains on 441 in TN/NC that takes forever.

If you're going to go that way and need a place to spend the night, stay in Commerce at the intersection of 441 and I--85 about 20 minutes north of Athens.

Well I will have my girlfriend with me so the scenic route might be kinda nice and hopefully not too bad. I have drove the interstates in Atlanta plenty and it gets old, and I don't handle traffic very well. Would you say the time of travel is a little in favor of the 75/Atl route? I know it is hard to tell with traffic but give me your best shot. I honestly think it will take about 4 and a half hours either way and the mountain route is less mileage.

I think it is probably 4- 4 1/2 hrs on the interstate and probably 5 hours going cross country. Just depends on whether you can stand doing 45 through national park and how well you handle curvy mountain roads.

Do you know Tim Ferraris, the brother of the late Katie Ferraris? Isn't he organizing this trip?

I may try and make it up there for the game.

No, the only reason I knew about this was because of it being posted in the UC. There was an Ad for it. It doesn't seem like a bad deal. $79 for students for a ticket, bus ride, and food.

hey buddy, dont stay in Atlanta. You're not gonna like it, especially with the traffic. if you can, stay in gainesville at the lake :) haha im just kidding, i dont even think we have hotels. seriously though, i would stay on the outskirts of atlanta, outside the perimeter, just to get away from all the traffic. now if your staying closer to lawrenceville, go 316, but if you're staying closer to buford, go 85 to 129. just watch out on 129 in arcade right before you get to pendergrass flea market, the cops there are pricks. its a 4 lane road, and i think the speed limit is 45. they'll pull you over for 5 over. ive seen it myself.
