I understand that we are improving our facilities in many ways and that is excellent, but I think we need to improve student housing for athletes so that it is the best in the country.

How does your dorm room look? That is one of the biggest direct comparisons that has to do with how you feel about a place. When you look at some of the dorms that athletes live in at other schools, it is clear that Gibbs has fallen behind.

When they tear down Stokely, I am not sure what academic buildings are going in, but they should be prepared to dramatically improve Gibbs.

Academic support? Thornton is a shining jewel.
Black students? Have a gorgeous cultural center.
Weight room? Fresh improvement.
Basketball and Football practice and playing facilities? Top notch...

Fortress Gibbs with a strict visitation policy that makes it very safe and yet accessible for the players girlfriends or tutors or whatever is also done pretty well now, but even that can be improved. I have not eaten in the food area in a long time, but my hope is that it is still a source of pride and excellence that gives the athletes excellent options nutritionally as opposed to some of the Aramark slop in Presidential.

Remodel Gibbs, make it a place where upperclassmen can drink and enjoy life with easy access to classes and no worries about agents approaching them and the whole athletic program will do better. I would also rather have athletes meeting young ladies, listening to music and having parties at a private club or residence than on the strip where they get arrested or fight a bouncer and lose their necklace.

Your thoughts?

I think the accepted venocular is African-American.

Good post and I totally agree.

Would a makeover prevent him from using the term, "Hambone's Experiment?"

Oh my bad, looks like I misunderstood what the thread was referring to.

Food there is top notch for a college student. Ridiculous actually, but it keeps the kids happy.

Actually black and white are both accepted terms. Stop tip toeing around racial issues--you only make them worse by doing so.

Well, you can't have a true "athletic dorm" where all athletes live, NCAA rules prohibit it. Gibbs or any other dorm has to be at least 51% non-athletes.

Second, the athletic department has very little control over the remodeling or policies at the dorm, UT Housing has all of that power and they aren't clammoring to give it up.

Third, since we have a dry campus, they cannot and will not allow athletes to "have a drink" at a campus dorm.

Fourth, if you require upperclassmen to live on campus, even in an upgraded space, that's going to be a huge recruiting disadvantage. There is no school in the country outside of the service academies that requires upperclassmen to live on-campus.

As far as Varsity Inn, the dining hall in Gibbs, it is top-notch. It was completely renovated two years ago and is very impressive, like a dining hall on a cruise ship. The food is outstanding.

I do not want to require upperclassmen to live there but I want it to be an option that is appealing. I guess as long as UT is dry that is unlikely. However back when I lived on campus fraternity houses and apartments were about as dry as oci

If you think that Hamilton cannot get what he asks for from housing you are telling me something surprising. Gibbs was the first dorm on campus to have card readers.

Having extra long beds and nice common areas and free wireless would be nice for our team and for the tutors and others who live there.

This might be incorrect, but I heard that the Black Cultural center was named after a man named Black, not neccessarily that it was for Black students. Regardless, most everyone will believe the latter anyway.

Why would you interject facts and ruin a perfectly good ignorant, uninformed rant? It's not like athletes ony dorms have been outlawed for going on 20 years now.

Every dorm on campus already has extra long beds, those have been a campus staple for years.

Every building on campus, including the dorms has free wired and wireless internet for students and has since at least 2001.

the need to upgrade gibbs to an "apartment style" living place like vol hall, aka knox place. gibbs has terribly small living quarters and is pretty much a dump other than the dining. which leads the athletes to wander out to other venues to hang out on the weekends which can lead to trouble if they are not careful when they are off campus.
i realize that the campus is dry, but the university needs to realize that kids drinking on campus in their dorm or apartment is far safer than going to an off campus bar or off campus house in the fort.

Gibbs actually has large dorm rooms, bigger than any other dorm on campus. The food at Gibbs is a 5 star restaurant compared to what was at presidential court a few years ago. I used to run down there every now and then to burn some dining dollars and get some dang good food. Btw, after their soph year, most football players who are still living on campus move to Vol Hall, which are legit on-campus apartments.

They are now referred to as resident halls and not dorms......sorry, I work with a lot of housing staff at my school and they correct me all the time, so I thought I'd be the jerk to do it now.
