Robert Reece Neyland had more maxims than the few they tried to recite before games a few seasons ago, (God, that had me rolling over in my grave).
Each week, I will select 5 of my 38 Maxims that most fit the week's game.
With that being said, here are my Top five Maxims for the Georgia game later today.
5. Don't save yourself. Go the limit. There are good men on the sidelines when you are exhausted. With "bench players" such as Coker, Mapu, Rogan, O'Neal, Myers-White and others the starters should play as hard as is possible. Tennessee has more depth than some people realize. Use it.
4. Football is a battle. Go out to fight and keep it up all afternoon. Most people say Fulmer is in a fight for his job. If that is so, this week's game is one battle in that war. I personally think this is one of Phil's top 5 most important games in his career.
3. If the line goes forward the team wins; If it comes backward the team loses. This goes for both sides of the ball. If Tennessee can run the ball and control the clock, they have a better chance at winning. Also, they need to get the D-Line into the backfield and stop Georgia's running attack. Do both of those things and it will be hard for Tennessee to lose.
2. At least three men make every tackle. Gang tackling. Tennessee has been working on tackling for two weeks. If they don't do it better later today, they never will. This is key.
1. Press the kicking game. Goes without saying. Tennessee can do everything above, but if they give up plays in the kicking game, and don't make plays when they have the chance, they will more than likely lose the game. This is something else they say they have worked on, and that they MUST show improvement in.
