Probably. Some might schedule for the overall record. Would be really smart for the best teams knowing they are going to start the year in the top 5-10. I hate to see that thoughWonder if this will eliminate some of the in-season games between different conferences - just let those occur in the playoffs since there will more than likely be 6-8 teams from the major conferences. Just let them duke it out in the playoffs.
This also completely demolishes the bowl games and the New Year's tradition of games - I'm sure some will still exist but it will not be the same.
CFB isn't Nascar by any stretch... but you'd at least HOPE the money grab self-inflicted wounds of Nascar can be avoided by CFB. IMO, CFB has potential to lose some viewership loyalty... where losing the least bit of scale could have massive $$$ ramifications. I used to watch every Nascar race, and now I couldn't tell you the last one I watched...I watch Vols and CFB, but care a little less...but, I guess everything is FINE.24 teams is when I quit. Will be just like the NCAA Tourney - all our brothers, half-brothers, first second and third cousins, brothers-in-law, neighbors, friends and enemies are in it. So watered down it is boring. Heck, if your team is so bad they will even have a play in game against another dreadful team for you to get in. This is just another ruse for teams to get in so they can make more money off of YOU. Coaches can say, "Hey we went 8-4 but we made the playoffs". Pitiful!!
If the 24 team playoff was in swing last year, here were the final rankings on Dec 7:
James Madison at 16 USC winner vs 1 Indiana
Arizona at 9 Alabama winner vs 8 Oklahoma
Tulane at 12 BYU winner vs 5 Oregon
Houston at 13 Texas winner vs 4 Texas Tech
Georgia Tech at 14 Vanderbilt winner vs 3 Georgia
Virginia at 11 Notre Dame winner vs 6 Ole Miss
Michigan at 10 Miami winner vs 7 Texas A&M
Iowa at 15 Utah winner vs 2 Ohio State
There's usually like 3-4 teams capable of winning the championship, so it's already "watered down."Like there are 24 teams capable each year of winning the championship. It’s a ridiculous move that only waters down college football and fueled by nothing but the almighty dollar.
Not so fast. 44% of the teams in the NFL make the playoffs. There are always a couple that don't have a chance at winning it all, but wild cards have won it multiple timesLike there are 24 teams capable each year of winning the championship. It’s a ridiculous move that only waters down college football and fueled by nothing but the almighty dollar.
If true, another bad day for college football. The 24 team playoff is coming within 2-3 seasons and they are going back to the old method of conference champs (no title game, just 2-3 way ties). This is likely going to be voted on in the next week or two.
It's also why UT and others are moving games up a week
Can't wait to see it...no more opt outs in minor bowl games, and Neyland hosting playoff games every other season.
Also be prepared for the SEC (and Big Ten) to decide soon if they are going to 20 teams or 24 team conferences, because I assure you, it's coming too
For the top 8 teams, it would mean that they would only play 4 post-season games to win the trophy. Subtract the conference championships (assuming they are eliminated), and that makes it only 3 additional games (which would be the equivalent of an 8 team playoff under current scheduling). Doesn't seem unreasonable.
The bill also includes a 3 year period of having to play as an independent before switching conferences.Fairly certain the bill proposed as of now is max of 20 teams within a conference.
As much as I despise a 24 team playoff, it will be nice to be in the thick of it yearly, as we should be.
