The 24 team playoff is coming within 2-3 seasons and they are going back to the old method of conference champs (no title game, just 2-3 way ties). This is likely going to be voted on in the next week or two.

It's also why UT and others are moving games up a week

Can't wait to see it...no more opt outs in minor bowl games, and Neyland hosting playoff games every other season.

Also be prepared for the SEC (and Big Ten) to decide soon if they are going to 20 teams or 24 team conferences, because I assure you, it's coming too

Fairly certain the bill proposed as of now is max of 20 teams within a conference.

As much as I despise a 24 team playoff, it will be nice to be in the thick of it yearly, as we should be.

20 teams. Bleah. 24 teams. Even more bleah. One of my regrets - maybe my biggest regret - is that Tennnessee never managed to right the ship before all of this meddling. Even one legendary year, or a few years. Just something to remember before they really finished ripping everything up.

With 24 teams, it could be half a decade before we see some teams. I can't imagine any rivalries surviving that. Hate on a schedule is like having sex on a schedule. Bleah.

I still think 24 is too much, but I'm 100% on board getting rid of the conference championship game.

LSU’s 2019 magic seems better with every passing year. The final champions before the world, college football and otherwise, just completely changed.

should be 8 teams at most, soon it will be 32 teams then more it will destroy the regular season. I remember god rest his soul Mike Leach wanted 64 teams
FCS has done it with 16 for a long time now and that has worked pretty well. The NFL does it with 14 and that works pretty well

No excuse with 24 teams for Heupel not having us in the playoff but with 24 teams is that really a accomplishment?

No, it wouldn't mean anything. I'm not even sure it means that much now.

Does anyone really give a damn that Oregon won their way to the playoff semi-finals last year? Does Tennessee making the playoffs in 2024 bring anyone any comfort? Because it doesn't do anything for me.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm certainly glad UT made that game in 2024, but honestly, none of it is significant in the aftermath. I don't think anything short of the title game means much, and even then ... well, you can ask TCU how much making the title game meant for them in the end.

That bill doesn’t matter and has no weight even if it were passed.

The SEC and Big ten will decide on their last 2-8 teams soon

Agreed. They had their time in the sun, but just don't hold that much interest for anyone unless your team is playing. Both teams in conference championships for for the SEC and B10 are pretty much going to the playoffs anyway.

What does concern me is that it will remove some (more) of the urgency of the regular season. You will be pretty much better guaranteed a spot if you go 9-3. Why empty out the playbook trying to win a game vs Georgia in week 10 or whatever when you will most likely see them again in a few weeks?
