Gerald Jones as a RB??

OK lets evaluate him at both positions:

WR:
+ Speed
+ Elusiveness with catch
+ Hands and concentration (Kid doesn't drop many)
- Downfield threat (He could easily improve here this year with better QB play)

RB:
+ Breakaway speed
+ Running ablility
+ Vision
- Size (Don't think he could take the beating)
- Tackle breaking ability (He may break one, but can he crash into a crowd and get those "tough yards?")

It is amazing to me how we all watch the same game and see it so differently. I have yet to see GJ be consistently good enough to impress me more than anybody else in the WR group. Different guys have shown talent at times and drop passes at other times. Maybe it is a lack of confidence in the QB position at times, but GJ is not head and shoulders above the rest imo. I will give you the Ky catch, but other times he runs the wrong route and drops almost everything in traffic.

Austin Rogers looked great in '07 but was almost invisible last year. Maybe the freshmen will cause the rest to buckle down. I really think the heart was gone from last year's team after the SC game. They woke up a little late, but we ridded ourselves of the people who didn't have real heart since then. Go Vols!

How do you know he ran the wrong routes?

I haven't seen him drop near as many balls as Moore or Rogers.

I wouldn't call Rogers in 07 great.

Although it would be intriguing to see, I could only think of 2 scenarios where this would be possible....

- The coaching staff would have to be extremely confident in the WR corps w/o Jones.

- There would have to be at least 2 injuries to our current RB's. More than likely, the injuries would have to be to both Hardesty and Brown, because Jones is similar to both in size and abilities.

So now Jones is similar to Bryce Brown. This is getting to the point of nonsense. Just unrealistic period.

Similar abilities, genius. Plus, we haven't even seen BB play a down of college football. I agree that the chances of Jones playing RB are unrealistic.

I don't think the idea is totally off the wall Eric. I don't think they should use him as an every down back but I can see him being really effective in certain packages. Apparently there are others that do agree with you.

YouTube - The Next Great Vol Running Back

Did anyone else notice that in the Youtube video, he was carrying to ball much the same way AFoster carried it? Swinging it wildly as he cut and juked (SP?)

If thats the case, the H**L no I don't want him a RB.

Do I think Jones has many of the qualities that could make a good RB? Yes.

Do I think there's any reason to seriously contemplate the move? No.

I'll also agree with Justin that it makes little sense to judge any WR based on last year. There is no more dependent position on the field than WR. Not only do you need to have a good enough OL to give the QB time make good choices and throws but it assumes that, even if given time, the QB WILL make good decisions and throws.

Last year the receivers were by and large simply hung out to dry. It is my sincere belief that if our WR corp consisted of Gault, Pickens & Meachem with Witten thrown in at TE for good measure our passing game would have still been mediocre at best. (as it was we were #107) If every receiver beat their defender on every play I still don't think it would have mattered most of the time. It looked THAT bad to me.

Not a WR in the world who would have looked elite in last years offense. I think we will see him break out this year.

I could see it if they used him as more of a receiver. Give him the occasional run but use him mostly when passing. The RB position is pretty stacked with Bryce Brown and David Oku. One of them should have a nice freshman campaign.

Crompton was throwing it 10 yards out of the receivers reach most of the time... Jerry Rice wouldn't have made all Sun Belt with those sorts of passes. I'm sure some of it was the receivers having no clue what route to run a lot of the time, but he should have been able to adjust.

Gerald Jones is every bit as good as Donte Stallworth, and the only guy that I would say is a superior athlete is Eric Berry. But then again, I think Eric Berry is already a future college football HOFer.

He single handidly won the 2007 UK game for us with a ridiculous catch.
Single handidly? So he snapped the ball, blocked the D line, dropped back and launched the pass, then ran really fast and caught it ! WOW, he shoulda wont the Heisman that year for sure! LOL

I think Teague and Nuke will get those touches in the run game. I would like to see Jones make some plays at receiver this year and that's it. And he's nowhere near Percy's level so just drop the using him in that role talk.

I wasn't comparing him to Harvin, just saying I think we would be better off giving Jones a few handoffs every once in a while than strictly putting him in the G-gun when we put him in the backfield. But no I do not see Nuke getting any touches in the run game, and especially not this year. He is tiny. Strictly WR. Teague on the other hand, I could see him being a hybrid type player...very possibly even more so than Jones.
