It’s a big game but not the end all be all. If TN loses I’m not less enthusiastic about the season. Ga Tech will be a solid football team. Key is a good coach. They have talent and are at home. It’ll be a fight. If TN drops a tough fought game I don’t think it’s a huge deal. I think this year’s team is one that peaks at the end of the season rather than starting off hot. So, dropping the Ga Tech game doesn’t crush the season for me. Jokingly, I feel some football superstition is owed to GA Tech for losing to us in 2017. I was at that game. TN somehow pulled out the win. Paul Bain! The man who lives in TN lore, gets the FG block of the decade; perhaps the century for TN. Tech had over 500 yds rushing…and lost. John Kelly and Marquez Callaway with big games. A Butch Jones classic. Also, we witnessed the roll out of the TD trashcan dunk. A prelude to what was to come.

Inferior talent? Do tell. If you're referring to the all important "star" rating, Indiana says hold my beer. There's more than enough talent on that roster to put a whipping on us. Plus, I'm not at all convinced we have a better coaching staff. We'll be very, very fortunate to win that game.

Interesting that you bring up Indiana. You do realize many of their starters were transfers and upperclassmen right? You cannot compare a JR or SR to a HS kid who gets a rating. I mean no therr isn’t enough talent on their roster to put a whopping on us. Also what are you basing that talent on?

I mean its a big game for sure. But if it is anywhere near the biggest game of the season, next year will have been BAD.

I doubt many here do not know my allegiance to GT. I will say this much-

If UT does not easily handle GT, the orange hat wearing side of me is going to become very, VERY concerned for the rest of the season.

Quite framkly, GT should keep things close for the first quarter or first half. Jitters by our freshman QB, etc. By the second half however, if the talent differential is not readily obvious then we are in big trouble

I don't have high hopes for the season anyway, and a poor showing in this game would not be for the best.

I looked at GT’s record from last year, even with an all timer QB like Haynes King, there’s nothing impressive about who they beat. Haynes King did everything for them, he was an outstanding player, I don’t feel like people on here are taking into account how much of a loss this is . I think Key is a good coach and gets the most out of his players, but I think we’ll handle them. As someone who follows Tech, am I that off base?

I don’t think it will be easy, but we’re giving them a lot of credit on here for being 8-4 last season. They did beat Clemson last season. So did Syracuse . They were undefeated going into November, which is solid. They then lost 3 of the last 4 regular season games, their only win was by 2 points over Boston College. They lost to BYU in the bowl game which is technically losing 4 of 5. They have given UGA trouble over the years and they should’ve won in Athens in 2024, but last year UGA played the most vanilla game they could play and the score wasnt as close as it indicates. The game being at night should help, but I think we win this in a 35-20 kind of game. Like I said earlier in this thread, I expect this game to be similar to the OU game in Norman in 2024.

I actually agree with you. Something people don’t seem to realize is that Georgia Tech got totally raided by Florida, their OC and several other staff members went there and so did a few of their players. This isn’t going to be the same GT team as last season, even though I do think Alberto Mendoza will be a solid QB for them.

That all said, I still don’t think it’ll be easy. Key maximizes the talent he has and knows how to sneak up on better teams. But as long as we don’t underestimate them I think we should win.

I mean...sweating out games is a Tennessee tradition. I don't see TN rolling Tech at home. I'd cap it at TN -3.5 right now.

I think we’re all going to analyze and over analyze this game and every game from now until September, but I take a pretty simplistic view to how this game will be won. I think it comes down to our o line allowing us to run the ball and our d line and linebackers playing smart. Very cliche, but to me it’s that simple. Key is going to want to junk this game up, ball control, keep it at 3rd and 4 and less. They run a ton of misdirection and mix a lot of QB run game (at least w/ King they did ) . On the flip side, If we’re able to run consistently that makes life much easier for Brandon or GMAC. If we can keep them away from the 3rd and 2s and not allow them to extend drives we should win going away. But if you let them stick around and get the crowd behind them in a tight game into the second half, that puts our freshman QBs in a tough spot in their first road start.

I agree with most of your thoughts.

Key is indeed a VERY good coach and GT will be fundamentally sound. That is honestly what concerns me and really is GTs only chance to win as UT in the Heupel era has struggled with those types of teams. Think illinois in the bowl game and Candy minus Pavias antics-the rest of that team was sound.

The talent level at GT has increased substantially in the past 3 years or so, but it is still a work on progress. The resources and support from the school admin just aren't there-and haven't been there in a long long time (60s or 70s). The NC they won in 90 was basically a fluke. The combination of a meh schedule and most teams screwing up badly somewhere along the way. Most likely one of the last "disputed" NCs we got the BCS a few years later and now the playoffs

I'm afraid the Jackets are doomed to a perpetual malaise in football. Some good years here and there. I give Key about 2 more seasons before he accepts a much bigger job.

I agree with this. We're going to be saying the same thing before at least a half dozen if not every conference game this season, as long as we are ranked and in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Looking at this meat grinder of a schedule, UK at home and Vandy on the 'road' are the only two games that look like they should be sure wins on paper, with Arky and USCjr on the road and Auburn at home the biggest question marks right now.
