I heard Coach Majors talk one time about a book Neyland gave him. Neyland said it was given to him by his old coach at West Point. Majors said it was a big influence on how he coached. I did some research on it and found the book. Check out the game axioms on page one. Im sure most people including myself thought Neyland came up with all those on his own. Although Neyland added to them later, I find it pretty cool it comes from a coach who mentored the likes of Neyland, Omar Bradley, Eisenhower, etc. Those guys were teammates on Armys 1914 Nat. Championship team. If someone on here has access to Pruitt you might get him a copy and share the history. How could you not read it. GBO.

Andy Kozar also covers this topic thoroughly in his book, Football as War Game: The Annotated Journals of General R.R. Neyland (). According to Kozar, Neyland culled his maxims from a number of different sources, including this book, and there were 38 originally. Of course, only seven have survived to this day.

If General Neyland were alive today, would he drive a Maxima?

What magazine might he subscribe to?

His anti-perspirant?

His health care provider?

These are just a few of his maxims. :)

Thanks for sharing this!

I found it confirming that in the original game axioms of his mentor, the maxim General Neyland listed as the 2nd maxim of his 7, is listed word for word as the first game axiom of three.

GAME AXIOMS
1. MAKE AND PLAY FOR THE BREAKS. WHEN ONE COMES YOUR WAY, SCORE.
2. IF THE GAME OR A BREAK GOES AGAINST YOU, don't LIE down: put on MORE STEAM.
3. don't SAVE YOURSELF. GO THE LIMIT. THERE ARE GOOD MEN ON THE SIDE LINE, WHEN YOU ARE EXHAUSTED.
