Gaulden laying the wood in NFL camp

You have to remember they lost a potential starting DB earlier in the day to a broken leg. And they are depth challenged at DB as it is.

Kind of a boneheaded move IMO. To those saying he’s fighting for a roster spot—he’s not. Third round picks don’t fight for roster spots. Also looked like he was running with the 1st team.

I understand what you mean, 3rd rd picks should be talented enough to not have to fight for a spot, however 3rd round picks certainly are fighting for a spot. There have been plenty of players that didn't live up to the scouting reports and shouldn't have been picked that high. They either weren't physical enough for the NFL or they just didn't have the talent to play at that level. Screw that if I were picked in the 3rd I would still come in with a chip on my shoulder and play like there is a chance of being cut at any moment. No body in the program wants to cut a third rounder but if he comes out soft or can't play at the NFL level at all would you keep him over a 6th rounder that had a great camp and clearly out played him? I wouldn't, but i'm not a coach or owner so I will never have to make that choice.

Sounds like they have been instructed to thud and not pop. There is a fine line. He was going for the ball and the receiver was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It’s hard to lookout for others when the ball is in the air. How many times have you seen two baseball players collide while tracking a fly ball?

If you are a Carolina fan you have to hope the WR that took the hit doesn’t develope alligator arms. Sometimes a hit like that can ruin a player.

The middle of the field is for men.

I don’t think you understand how it works. Draft picks, no matter the round, are rarely ever cut in the first couple of seasons. UDFA’s are the guys fighting for rosters spots. 3rd and 4th year guys who are on the final years of their rookie contracts are the guys fighting for roster spots.

It’s too expensive to cut a draft pick, they have more guaranteed money than an UDFA, and there is often a salary cap penalty involved.

I understand how it works and yes it all depends on what kind of contract they signed with player and how much money is involved. Yes I know what you mean by most franchise's not wanting cut draft picks and you are right because a majority of them do get hefty signing bonuses that are guaranteed. What I am saying is if a guy comes in out of college with high expectations and is drafted high and he comes in and looks like Tarzan plays like Jane he is still in trouble. Yes you may be right about him not getting cut his rookie year, but his chances of seeing any playing time that season are slim. IF the player shows no improvement and comes back the following season with the same results he will be lucky if he even gets to play out his rookie deal. There are only 53 spots, and players only have so many chances to prove their worth, I mean the higher draft picks are going to get more chances at it, but if you got a guy that can't get the job done these franchise's have enough money to eat some if the guy is a bust.

I mean what if Gaulden stopped completely, let him catch it, didn't even touch him and let him go for 6, do you think him saying he didn't want to hurt his teammate would fly with the coaches? Basically my point was just because a guy is drafted in the 3rd round doesn't mean he doesn't have to earn his keep, especially if he wants to play and secure a future in the sport. Yeah you're probably right about the roster spot, most teams aren't going to cut a 3rd rounder, but if he wants to play, practice and preseason are his time to shine.

No matter what, i think this is good publicity for Gaulden. Even if the coaches look down on this, they wont forget him after this. And if he does get cut, then this is like an advertisement for other teams to look to show he can play.

The way I see it. You practice like you play. If hit softly in practice it will translate to that in real games. As far as Funchess. Should change his name to “bunches” because that’s where his panties went into a bunch. Softie!!

Might as well learn to tackle from the best or let them walk in the end zone. I don’t see the problem. He regretted it immediately but shouldn’t it should be instinct if you are practicing full speed.

If you are not going 100% in practice...you will not get it in game. I understand that you don't want to lay the wood to your team, however refer back to the first sentence.

No matter if you practicing routes or sparring, sometimes you are going to take a solid lick!

The problem is that if you practice really hard at not hitting, you get good at not hitting.

Why is that Puzzy complaining about being on the receiving end of some good wood laying work?
Thats sorta what i was thinking. Im guessing maybe by doing that you get to where you can control yourself better, but still if you're used to not hitting full force i would think it would be weird in a game situation to hit hard.
