It's a dying business model, just like video rental. I went all digital this generation and never looked back. The convenience far outweighs any benefit of owning physical IMO. The next phase will be streaming, which is still not where it needs to be but it will get there eventually. I'd say by the end of the upcoming generation, game streaming will be extremely popular.

It will be interesting to see if a company can finally make it work. Theoretically it should be possible. Under ideal conditions you could add somewhere in the range of 30-50 ms of input lag with the roundtrip the data has to make. So in the future if we're all playing on ultra-low latency TVs, that would equal about what most people experience now anyway.

The flipside is that playing games locally will only become more accessible. The Witcher 3 being on Switch is a prime example of that. The Switch actually has really weak hardware, especially for 2020. I think by the end of the PS5/XSX generation (2027 or so), smartphones and tablets will put out graphics comparable to the best looking games of today in 4K, 60 FPS, no compromises on graphical effects. So the next Playstation may be embedded into Sony TVs, while Microsoft will rely on Game Pass and Windows users with Nintendo continuing to make what are essentially souped-up tablet/smartphone gaming devices.

switched to PC gaming, I feel like that’s becoming a more popular trend as well which is going to impact GameStop also. Combine that with most people buying their games digitally and this company is screwed
