Just because the number of bets is split 50/50 doesn't mean the amount of money wagered on each team is even.

For example you sometimes see a favorite with 25% of the wagers, yet the line continues to grow. That's because the 25% of people betting on the favorite are wagering much more money per bet than the 75% on the underdog.
