GAME THREAD: Texas in Knoxville, Sunday, 2/15, 3pm EST, ABC

Claude's comment: Caldwell tightened to almost all 1-1 and 2-2 subs in the second half trying to stay in it, but it wasn't enough.

I also will eat some crow. Nya played really well for Nya yesterday. She was sprinting to get back on plays and doing a healthy and hilarious amount of smack talking. We needed more from Lyss and Zee. Also worth noting that Mya left the game crying after one of her turnovers. Managing first year players is hard!

I don’t think they want a traditional post in this system. They’d play five guards if they could.
I wonder if this is still true? I think that the way we got beat up in the post in half-court last year made an impression on Kim. She went and got Janiah and Jersey, and has leaned on Zee -- so more "length" than "banger" and with Janiah, obviously wanting slashing offense and the three ball, still, an emphasis on inside. Don't know who she missed in the portal, but except for rare games, Robertson hasn't been the three-point shooter any of our top three were last year, and Mia is the only freshman who has show the capacity for consistent, volume 3-point shooting. Others may get there, though whether it will be this year is in doubt. Anyway, then Kim has gone out and recruited Big Oh and Gabby. I see Big Oh as possibly a better-in-every-way version of Janiah and Gabby in the same lane as Deniya -- a big, strong guard. Hopefully she can defend as well as Deniya and finish better at the rim as a freshman. (I expect Deniya to take a BIG step up next year on both finishing and her 3pt shot!)

Also, Kim was talking, from last summer, about getting inside and "shot selection" -- which I hear as "don't take an early three unless its the exact kind we want, let's get inside."

So, I know this is kind of muddled, but what I'm trying to say is I think Kim is evolving her "system" to account for bigger, faster, stronger, more talented players at every position AND the focus on teams who can recruit the very few that are out there on the dominant post player. I don't think she's there yet, certainly not on the court with this team, and perhaps not even in her own thinking, but as we see what happens with recruiting and the portal, maybe we will get more of an idea. Of course, the thing about watching who she signs is that we will never know who she truly wanted. No one gets the top of their recruiting list every year, and certainly this year's on-court performance so far hasn't been a boon to next year's recruiting. (Though, if they rally and perform significantly better for this las stretch... well, that would be a huge feather in Kim's hat and a big boost.)

Anyway, in the "List of Questions Someone Should Ask Coach Kim," what about, "You've said you would play five guards if you could. After two seasons in the SEC, how do you feel about that now, and what's your current thinking about where your system is headed and the players you need to run it?"

I took your post to say that Mia had dropped from 2 to 7 in that dumb plus/minus measurement. I think there is something missing in the middle of the post perhaps.
Regarding Mia, however, you said she didn’t play well against top teams and then I think later specifically said she did not play well against top five teams and therefore would not have helped today so let me add this.
She did not have a great game on the road against a very experienced and disciplined UConn. This, in my mind was not a surprise for a freshman to have a tough outing in this scenario. SC, again on the road, at some point in that game she was concussed (unless info has come out that it happened in practice) but continued to play. Not surprising she didn’t shoot well with a head injury.
So, IMO these two games (one with a serious injury) do not provide a sufficient sample size to project she would not have had a good game today or that she can’t play against top 5 teams. I believe that her complete body of work to date instead shows she could have been the piece that got us over the line today. That in no way is meant as a slight to the kids who did play.
I love her demeanor, a happy warrior for sure. She will help lead the LVs to big victories before her time here is done. Hopefully for four years.
Yes, and all we would have needed from her were just a little bit more than her replacements did. I like Mya and think she will do fine but at this point she us well behind Mia. What is lost in Dark Phoenix's continued dismissiveness of Mia is that she rarely turns the ball over, even against the best teams. This allows Cooper to have much less ball handling responsibilities, which may have led to 4 or 5 less turnovers. I also think Mia is a fast learner and will score points against top 5 teams.

totally agree. I think Kim has a lot of reflection that she needs to do this summer on both the system and personnel, and my guess is that we see her go for a wider array of players in the portal including a more traditional
post. Everybody wants a solid post who can get up and down the court so we will have competition for them. Even Vandy found a use for ADR against Texas, and I thought she might be a lost cause. It's nice to have players like that for specific situations or teams though.

I don't want to say that I've written this season off, but I've definitely recalibrated my expectations. After doing that, I have also just leaned into the idea that we should be playing our freshmen and getting them ready for next year. Even if Mia only gave us two points, she's at least getting the experience of playing a very tough Texas defense.

Thank you @Lucy the +/- stat is as stupid as the WAR stat in baseball ...

I would like to give a shout out to Robinson, who has played really well and contained the last two games. She is starting to deserve all those minutes she gets. For the first time in a game, I was actually hoping she would take a couple of more shots than she did and relieve Cooper of so much responsibility. Good to see!

I really liked her game yesterday. 😭😭😭

I really thought she would shoot us out of it, but she made very few stupid fouls and took very few stupid shots. If she could come on and be a relatively consistent shooter, that would be incredibly helpful for us and could not possibly be more timely.

Yes she finally stepped up in an elite matchup especially with a lot of us criticizing her. She must keep it going! I think Kim's talking to with the seniors probably had some impact.

I had a friend that reffed HS for many years and he said in the before game/halftime Ref hospitality room. He said one HS always had a layout of food fit for a king. He said it was hard to get that out of his mind on the 50/50 calls, especially with him being a foodie. He also said after halftime running down the court a couple times had hard time keeping food down. 🤣

😂

That's hilarious. I've wondered about those digestion issues during the games.

I confess that I was thinking more about the Jeremy Pruitt version of the Happy Meal bags.

Good effort against a good texas team. wish it had turned out differently. Gamecocks still rule the SEC after that there is a lot of parity

Overall reflection: Hopefully, this team has decided to play hard. I get the feeling that this team, maybe especially the upperclass leadership, has been a hard-headed bunch, and it took a while to get them to start listening and learning. So, good. The problem is that they wasted a lot of learning opportunities. If they'd learned this lesson after UCLA, or at the latest, Louisville, they might have been ready to beat Texas yesterday. Now, at least, they've started. Hopefully they can make it far enough as a team to show that they are competitive, even win a game or two, against some of the tough competition they are going to face from here on out. We'll see.

Refs not going to call a foul but I think that should be a foul on that last possession as Harmon bumps Cooper really hard. I guess they are say Cooper caused the contact even though her back was turned.

Not sure how concerning the point distribution should be for the Lady Vols immediate and near future.

Cooper accounted for nearly half of the LV scoring. She, Barker, and Robertson (a junior who may or may not return plus two seniors) accounted for 52 of our 63 points. Assist leader was Latham with three followed by Cooper with two. Among the younger players, Civil had six points and seven rebounds. Nobody else contributed much offensively.

The Caldwell system is supposed to be fast-paced, high-volume, high-scoring design focused on threes and layups off turnovers. What we're seeing against top teams more closely resembles the "clear out for Rickea" offense that was disappointing to so many.

Are our younger players expected to make a great leap forward next year? Texas had much more balanced scoring and returns just about everyone who contribute except Harmon. If Cooper had gotten into foul trouble, where would we have been (even if Mia were available )? Could we produce enough offense to keep up with most Top Ten teams? Our strength was supposed to be our depth and the ability to wear down other teams, but is that really happening?

Also, what's up with Ashton Judd for Texas? She transferred from Mizzou for her senior season and was their third-leading scorer early in the season. I don't think she got off the bench yesterday.

Judd doesn't play there much. Missed a big opportunity to play by not coming to Tennessee. Her three point shooting would have been a big help for us.

The story of this season is how were challenged offensively.

Agree about Judd. Could have been a big contributor for a Tennessee team that is postseason-bound. She rolled the dice (and maybe collected a nice NIL payout) by going to Texas. She's part of a winning program now but seems to be an observer. Maybe that's good enough.

At least she will always have bragging rights about being part of Vic's softest team ever.

Haven't read all so the posts so don't know if this has already been addressed.

When a Texas player (Harmon?) hit the floor (possible flop) on a non-charge call, Robertson very obviously and emphatically motioned toward her with both hands in a "stay-down" gesture. She appeared to be mocking the Texas player while play continued around them.

Question: Could this be interpreted as taunting or provocative action by the referees? Could they give her a technical and award Texas shots and the ball?

I didn't love the final play execution because Nya and Civil ended up in the corner together. Civil needed to vacate the corner so that when the double team came, Cooper could kick to Nya in the corner for the win. As it happened, Cooper got doubled and had no legitimate outlet, so a play that started out with promise ended up busted.

She wasn’t passing anyway, the Kane open d up for her, when Lee moved out to the shooter, Preston had her back turned and it looked like an easy layup over a small guard, but by the time Preston turned around to swipe the ball it was already too late for her to react.

Way more contact than Baker got whistled for 19 seconds earlier.

Look at defender in stop action leaning into 55 outside her cylinder. Check out her knees. That is a foul!
