GAME THREAD: Missouri in Knoxville, Thursday, 6:30EST, SECN+

Even if we lose to TX, I think we can beat Ole Miss and Oklahoma.
If we don’t beat Oklahoma, given their recent struggles, that would tell me we haven’t grown past KJH's A- level. “Pretty Good” is below standard for Tennessee.

I just wish we'd had one more game in which we were the favorites to win between Mizzou and Texas to give our players more time to build confidence. With the way Texas is going to come out Sunday with what will likely be their most swarming defense of the season, I worry we may not get the ball across half court much less get enough space to shoot.

Perhaps, the LVs also will coming out swarming and swinging. I like the LVs' chances against TX. GBO.

I would have thought we practice against that style of D more than anybody.

What IS the deal with having the teams on the baselines? There is all that usual space that appears to be occupied only by cheerleaders.
If notice Vanderbilt games head coaches still can coach on the sidelines.
Cheerleader have more room on that sideline.
And more space for players chasing balls before having to miss fan, seats, tablets, photographer.
Other universities could father Vanderbilt example and keep outbound line more clear of things to run into.
as in the Hoosier Movie
All courts same length goal 10 foot.
So technically Vanderbilt gym just as legal as any other gymnasium.

Those Longhorns could be showing the horns come Sunday

Good win! But I still can't get my head around this team. Are they a group that can play lights out and bully weaker teams but then just give up when the play the more talented teams? I hope last night was a re-awakening but we will see. I thought the Texas game might tell us something but with the egg they laid at VU, I am not sure how good they really are.
I mean that has been the team's pattern all season. Overwhelm teams who can't match up with them athletically. Mizzou would have struggled with a full roster but down their post players they were ducks sitting on a chair tied to a railroad track.

But against, better comp, they have struggled all season. I am not convinced they give up so much as don't really know what to do when the pressure defense is not working for them.

As for TX, Vandy is a top 5 team and this was a game where the Shea Ralph's bunch came out firing on all cylinders and TX could not buy a bucket.

For the LVs, the game against TX (at home) is a great chance to break this grim pattern and they also have Vandy at home, so the schedule has broken in their favor for these two pivotal games.

Worst court in P4 Basketball it is built on a raised stage layout with a noticeable drop off on the sidelines. Very unsafe& so unorthodox that it is one of a kind & definitely gives the home team an advantage as there is no court that would mirror it and the difference in game management & background in shooting zones. Every scape is different to the players eyes in relation to all the places they’ve played in their life. It’s unexplainable that a contractor signed off on that albatross.

I'm so confused about Zee. I read that she gave a very inspiring speech to the team and they credited her with their new found fire. Then she goes out and not only lays an absolute stinker, but also is observed by many to be pouty and have bad body language WTF? If that ain't a metaphor for this teams mindset I don't know what is

I hope she's feeling good and ready to go Sunday because she's got a chore and a half. Cunningham, Oldacre and Sidwell are a triple handful. I'm really worried they're gonna abuse poor Zee. Or that she'll spend the whole game on the perimeter shooting 3s.

One more time: That's if Zee bothers to get in the pain to begin!

Missouri started the game with nine players and two fouled out, leaving seven to play, saw a couple of players that haven’t played much, I guess it was good experience for them. Thought Vincent stepped up, drove to the basket, and got to shoot foul shots. That worked, while driving and dishing didn’t work so well, because the shots weren’t falling. Maybe she can help in other games. Maybe should put these comments in the non Lady Vol thread, but it did happen in this game. 🤷‍♀️

It’s an abomination to the sport.

@RetroVol can probably break down better but I thought the substitute pattern was the best CKC put together all season. Even Civil and Prawl got top tier minutes with very good performances from the bench.
He’s been posting the substitution pattern using chatticathybot. 😉
I did check the boxscore. Really good depth of minutes through the top ten.

There loaded and Candybilt is a good team. We better play hard noised defense all over the court but especially in the paint. Just fight for 40 minutes and I'll be happy.

Here's the substitution patterns compliments of ClaudeCode and Claude 4.5 Extended chatbot. I had it show these individually by time rather than showing, e.g., one entry for 5:5 then the the times that occurred in the quarter. I'll post how I did this is the AI thread.

Claude commented: Tennessee won this one 98-53, and you can see the difference from the South Carolina game. When things are going well, Caldwell runs her hockey-style system full throttle - four 5-5 subs in Q3 alone (7:47, 4:59, 3:45, 2:38). Missouri couldn't keep up, relying mostly on 1-1 subs throughout.

I thought this was a really important blowout. Yes, it was just Mizzou but think if the LVs had lost! It really would have felt like this team was disintegrating much the same way that Arkansas team a few years back did. It also would have cast a bigger shadow on Coach Kim and the program in general. It also would have made her postgame comments after the SC game seem even more inappropriate and any effort on her part to change the narrative inept. It also would have suggested that the players have already checked out for this season and increase the likelihood that would lose many of them after the season was over. None of this would be helpful in getting much needed portal players to come here next year. So, in some ways the viability of our whole current program would have started to tip in a negative direction with a loss. The fact that they came up so motivated and played so hard for 40 minutes was great news that a disaster has been averted. This will still be the case if we lose by 20 to Texas. That would be disappointing but not disastrous. So, I love this game and performance if for no other reason than the alternative would have been a ---- show.

"Pretty Good" has been our standard for the last 18 years.

If you will permit a semantic quibble, we have been performing below TN LV standard since Pat left. Up until 2008, there were two teams for which FF was the minimum acceptable outcome. Then there was just one. Later Dawn moved SC into the duopoly.

Time will tell if we are progressing beyond the unacceptable S16 ceiling.

Yes I seen that court is higher than fans on the sidelines where the Vanderbilt cheer squad is during games.
there is plenty of room for players to stop before going over edge of the court. Never been in Vanderbilt gym but seeing fans standing close by the edge of the court dropoff 2/12 to 3 feet if it comes half up average size body.
There a danger for someone falling and hurting body part if they don't pay attention.
But visit team should not be close to that edge because Vanderbilt court has lots of room just going by all room the cheerleader have by there spacing.
NCAA don't see a problem.
University that have fans and seats close to the outbound is more dangerous to players than the Vanderbilt gym is.
Some places have tables close to basketball goal and cameraman and photographers. Cheerleader and fans close to sidelines behind the goal.

I wouldn't have design that dropoff . But don't have problem with the wider court. See no reason for a visiting team fall off that court by accidentally normal game play.

Football stadium some could use more area for players when go outbounds going hard play . End zone and sidelines.

Far as been ing warehouse more space gym.
I seen AAU basketball where two or games going on at same building. And you can hear whistle from the other games in the same building. And when camera man or someone posting from the sidelines maybe a fan because video comes one spot on the sidelines.
I watch AAU summer league ball whatever hick you call it of Tennessee recuits have watch some after they where in college.
On YouTube.

If you ever search for high school games some have several online or YouTube and other team highschool your lucky to find more than one. Even some easier to find summer league ball than high school games.
Most players I have found one game or two.
Sometimes can find none other times you find games easy.
Iowa girl Ellie Muller Kellie Harper has coming in next year found Dowling Catholic high when they visited other high school or Iowa state tournament form last year. Even find Minnesota Thanksgiving preseason site where they invite teams from different states.
To end this long post I have watch about more of her games because it is been easier to find them.
