HOOPS CENTRAL: LADY VOLS VS. NO. 13/13 SOUTH CAROLINA

February 22, 2019

Girls,

You can still go into the SEC's with some steam. A win against SC and two folllowups, Then you won't have to bank on the SEC outcome.

You players, coaches and staff have got to dig down deep and find a unified vision.
One focus.

3 things:

  • Cooper is suiting up from an ankle injury early... Attack her on drives that make her pushoff of that leg.
  • Make a determined commitment to coming out in every quarter fierce. "Controlled Aggression" on both defense and offense. . . Never letting anyone second guess you about effort.
  • Attack the board with numbers,,,Win this battle

110%

I have only personally seen 110% twice in my coaching life,(doing 10% more than you are capable of ordinarily)
both times by individuals
I'd like to see it in a team tomorrow

Total focus
total effort
Hold each other accountable for the above

Do That!

Coach, ya got style! Props.

I have to have,,,
In most any sport,, a coach with personality takes the attention off of their team (Geno, Pat, , Tara, etc)...
In each coach's case, when you think of their players you tend to think:
"Pat coached Candace, not Candace played for Pat...or...Geno was Diana's coach,, not Diana played for Geno
The coach got top billing.
takes the focus off of the athlete
So the athlete could concentrate on their craft.

That is Sports Psychology 101 and the best of the best know it.

This is a very winnable game. A Home game, versus a team that doesn't have a real star player, and their leading scorer is nursing an ankle injury.

My 3 biggest concerns:

1) Can Westbrook/Tenn limit the penetration of the USC guards?

2) Does Tenn have anybody who can match up with Herbert Harrigan?...Zaay Green has the athletic ability and fight, but does she have enough size?

3) The size and physicality of USC post players(Jennings,Saxton,Grissett)

SC hasn't had the best of seasons, but they are aggressive, feisty, and strong on defense. To have a chance, Tenn. will need to stay with SC on both ends like they did at Missouri. If they're close at halftime, for goodness sake, don't let Holly talk!

If our guards don’t come to play defense, this game will get ugly, fast. This USC bunch shows exactly the kind of fight and spunk our girls need to show.

Up early watching old Tennessee games (this one UConn be Tennessee 2007) and wondering where this kind of fight went? I can deal with the growing pains of a young team. What I can’t understand is why this team is so passive and so soft. God, I miss this kind of Tennessee basketball. Hopefully we will see it today!

She'll tell em "force the ball inside, even if the post is covered by 116 players" "Keep forcing the ball inside, I know they'll break."
