However, at the moment, Coop is shooting about 11% from the 3 in the SEC. In tight games she has to do what she does best: get to the midrange and pull up or to the glass without over-dribbling the ball, especially when the game is on the line. This will come with growth and basketball IQ. Also, It appears more work has to be done on situational moments in games. We played straight up one on one defense in the final 10 seconds with 2 fouls to give and let a point guard waltz into the paint and close the game for LSU. Coaches need to coach those situations and we had 2 timeouts available to teach and explain these situations. There is still work to be done. The moment Gilbert started to advance with 6-7 seconds on the clock she should have been fouled and LSU made to inbound the ball. It puts pressure on the offense and that is where the coaches let us down last night. All in all a good game, but everyone including the coaching staff had lapses that need to be corrected.

There is no assistant gig in the country that pays like Tennessee. Those assistants aren't leaving unless 1)They land a good head coaching position that probably won't pay what the make now or 2) they are terminated for non performance.

Got to go for the steal immediately as the ball is inbounded. Don’t just waste the foul.

But at least know if you don't get that steal you can foul and force them to take it out again rather than letting a point guard get a 2 foot shot off. Hopefully, if we are in that situation again, players and coaches have learned and know all options available to them. The SEC is too close and many games can come down to 1-2 possessions for a win or a loss.

Absolutely. You would think they had covered that end game situation numerous times, but in the heat of the moment things can blur.

Debatable. I’m not going to pretend I know their intentions. But if an assistant coach wants to be a HC they go where opportunity is. Only a small window to pursue the main seat as coaches cycle in yearly.

Glad you mentioned that. Honestly, that was as catastrophic of a coaching error as another close game back last season. The LVs had at least 2 fouls to give. They could have eaten most of the game clock with fouling. There is a risk because the LSU player might get into the shooting motion, knowing a foul is coming but letting the LSU dribble you down for 7 seconds and then drive the lane was a strategic error.

But they were. CKC sent them out using the same high press approach that got them burned against OK and like that game shifted when things were getting out of hand.

No amount of player effort can compensate for being left in a 3-1 fastbreak.

It sort of looks like CKC starts each game determined to prove her system will work and then has to go to plan B (or her staff convinces to).

On the plus side, her fast paced spread offense is working great. When they settle into a aggressive man-to-man defense, with Coop being a one person press, they are also having success. They just need to not use the high press, send everyone strategy except in very select moments of the game.

Rons1989, I agree with your comment that the LVs don't have to be the best defensive team to beat teams like Oklahoma and LSU. Hovever, they do have to be a good defensive team which they are not at this point. Remember CPS's comment, "offense sell tickets, but defense wins games" (more or less accurate)

Good points madt. I see this as the learning experience that Kim and her top assistant are going thru against these veteran HC's and hope each of these instances are a one and done learning experience. We knew coming in she was probably going to get schooled some in her 1st yr going against Mulkey, Dawn etc.

Hope we see some of these changes against Arky.

Totally agree do i think we can be a good defensive yes wit the athletes we have but i think right now we are who we are and thats really good offensively....if im not mistaken down the stretch against lsu we had the lead like 4 times n could not close the deal u get a few stops we tlking different hell if they jus contain morrow in the first half this a different convo....right now its baby steps for this team get a few stops here n there cuz we are going to score

Arky's not elite,,,Her system will easily be done against a non-elite team

Yes, her stares said it all. I'm just tiring of the comments that place the blame completely on the players without any recognition that there are flaws with the approach that other teams will continue to take advantage of. And that will result in losses.

You do realize that sometimes assistants leave for other valid reasons. CKC needs assistant coaches who are experienced and are not afraid to tell her when something is not going to work. She doesn't need "yes whatever you say" assistants.
