Game Thread: Lady Vols v NC State, Away, Wed., 4PM, ESPN2, Tues Nov 4th

I am not offended by it in the slightest. If you read my original post I said that typically situations like this don’t end well (I also say this as someone who has coached at the college level). I think Mia and Mya are great. I’m not offended at all. I just said it’s something to be aware of.
Also one other thing to note. Being really invested in the game and sitting on the sideline is one thing. Barking orders at players who barely know you WHILE their coach is trying to talk to them is a completely different thing.

It didn’t. Nothing about it is asinine maybe studying the meaning of unfamiliar words would help. But I’m not arguing with you so I’ll be straightforward. They would’ve loss this game today with or without the entire roster. This team went up 10 points 41-31 in the 2nd qtr and after that not much TN on the sideline or on the court did made sense.
It seem as if they were playing in a scrimmage or exhibition.
I saw the bad calls by the officials and the technical foul which was a poor call by the referee yet I really wanted to see the coaching staff do more to get the team settled down and regroup. Again, CKC and Coach Lazo are building a strong roster on paper but the coaching staff as a whole needs to show more progress.
Something is OFF!

I was with you until the last sentence. The dismissal is exactly what is off. Asinine take to flippantly express that it has nothing to do with the on court play today.

I’m speaking in general. There are people that are offended and that’s a sign of weakness. I wouldn’t give a crap what the guy is saying when it’s focusing on basketball. Now if he makes statements beyond basketball that are personal that’s another story and then family of those players should let him know he crossed the line. In watching the Overtime Select series, I never once saw that guy speaking down on a player or make it personal. So again, complaining about some else opinion regardless of them being animated or extremely vocal is soft.

I would’ve love for them to pull this out and then learn from their mistakes…all that’s about to happen now is we about to blow thru all these time be 5-1 before UCLA and still won’t know anything about the team progress

I disagree. This was a top 10 matchup and we lost by 3 to very quality team on a neutral floor. Lots to learn from this.

Belmont and MTSU are both very well coached, competitive mid-major teams who give another level when they see orange and white. Both of those games will offer plenty of opportunity for improvement against quality competition. Yes, we will likely win those games, but they are certainly worth playing.

can’t agree enough that those two teams turn it on when they see orange and white. both coaches are great coaches, and although we should win, those games will help us improve a lot.

You can tell him how you feel about that Volfan1017 at the next game. As I said, being halfway across the country I see that stuff at games on all levels.
That’s the thing about free speech all the way around… I wouldn’t give give a crap about what that guy is saying from the stands.

The thing I am worried about is the blueprint that comes from a game like this
When subbing we have to be more deliberate
there is a time to mass sub and a time to sub for purpose and that is what our focus should be on moving forward

As someone who sat a few rows behind them, I can confirm it was. At halftime he was also up by the bathrooms talking on the phone (very loudly) giving his opinions about the game. Not good. I said I was concerned literally the day they signed and most of you all called me negative but here we are 😂
The announcer even commented on him coaching from the sidelines. I don't remember her exact wording, but that's part of the chemistry that I'm hoping comes along but we will see. I'm hoping Kim gets that under control and there is a different demeanor in game 2...that can't go on!

Considering Zee and Jersey gave them nothing on offensive end and without Ruby experience putting more on freshman to have the lead in last minute not bad. Like I said earlier Pack much further ahead in understanding system allowing more fluidity on court. Kim said it best her teams are at there worst 1st month. I expect much better playing by the time we go to UCLA. In CHRIST Alone

One thing that concerns me is that we did not wear them out at all. And we count on that. Their starters played between 30 and 39 minutes. The most anyone played off the bench was 10 minutes and yet we were just as worn down as they by the end of the game. That is concerning.

Why were we shoe tying??

That was on my mind for much of the game, but got really concerned after we blew that 10-point lead. When the Pack didn't cave either physically OR mentally like they were supposed to, I think the Lady Vols maybe started thinking they could actually end up losing. Once NCST got over their fatigue hump they took the mental lead and they never gave it up.

I think maybe the foul disparity probably frustrated our team, but even more frustrating was the fact that all the exhausting effort they were putting in on the press wasn't working, and that, I feel, is what hurt us most mentally. I'm sure they all had in the backs of their minds that eventually the Pack would wear down, but the Pack hadn't read that script.

I do think this loss gives us a lot of insight into what we need to work on before we face UCLA.

I think Coach Caldwell needs to focus on her coaching staff and coaching philosophy. Again, I think she is a really good coach who can become one of the best in this new era. CKC is a championship caliber coach.
Growth is the key. CKC has to meet growth as a coach and with this system either her substitution patterns are adjusted or it’ll be hit or miss game to game against top competition.
In addition, whoever on the staff who is coaching/teaching post needs to step this ish up.
This team has 4 rotation players in the post that have started games since their freshman season. 1 junior and 3 seniors. Players that have averaged double figures. Posted anywhere from 6-8 rebounds a game.
There’s no reason to be getting outplayed in the post with 4 players giving you depth with starters experience as a team.
Maybe they need to stop practicing their post players as guards and expecting them to play as posts/forwards defensively and offensively in REAL games.

As a player you in this system its not about getting steals every time but waring your opponent out. New players will learn this get steals when they are there but waring them out is more valuable so you don't get called for ticks tack fouls slowing pace down. Takes time to learn.

I missed the game due to being at work. Thus, I came home and watched the game without my usual reactivity of a live game. The game was an illustration of how it takes time for a new group of players to learn Kim's system. The few positives include the brilliant play of Cooper, the unheralded good play of Latham (she had the best =/- of the team with +8), the perseverance of Mia who had a tough night in her first collegiate game but made two key buckets late in the game, the continued signs that Civil is going to be a force, and the continued good 3 point shooting of Cooper and Barker. For me, by far the worst aspect of game was the absence of assists and even attempted assists by anyone other than Cooper. It was almost like assists were not even considered as an option. Also disappointing was not to win the turnover margin or rebounds (Barker with only 2), the total no-show by Wolfenbarger (0 points, 4 fouls), and the continued issues with Spearman finishing her shots. That said, I am not particularly discouraged. We still almost beat a top 10 team, and we will only get better as the players adjust to the system and to each other.

We win with ruby, I know I know, I didn't say I was against her being dismissed.

I like this team very much the amount of scoring versatility n depth is crazy they just need to get there ish together very dangerous and this is without ruby even tho i loved us much more with her the roster turnover is elite and to be honest even with everything against us tonight it should’ve been a double digit win

Last year we ran teams into the ground. They had state winded tonight. Then they backed off and State caught their breath and we played half court til the 4th quarter. My thoughts.

You all we lost against the #9 team in the nation in our first game of the season, without one of our best players who was just dismissed from the team. We will be fine. It takes time to gel, make substitution patterns, find out who plays the best with each other, etc…. I think majority of us wanted us to play good teams and not pushover teams. Do I think we’re better than NC State? Hell yeah! They have had all summer to practice with who they have. We have Ruby we win this game. To me NC State should be worried because we only lost by 3 without Ruby. Just imagine if we had her. I think we showed a lot of fight, in spite of us playing sloppy, didn’t get the calls, had adversity with the loss of Ruby just two days ago, and pretty much played them at home. We will be fine.Go Lady Vols!

Wes Moore pretty much snubbed his nose at CKC and threw down the gauntlet, challenging the idea of using a deep rotation. Check out the distribution of minutes for State… ☝️

As an average non-ball knower, this looked like a heavy one-sided reffed game in NC State’s favor. The lady Vols couldn’t catch a foul in their favor to Dave their lives. That, and that tall white girl, whatever her name is, was basically Zach Edey living in the paint, got all the rebounds and the whistles. Their whole strategy was to get her the ball and it worked. 😑
