This discussion around Avery Strickland reminds of posts from a few years back that proclaimed "mark my words, Edie Darby will be our starting PG by her senior season!!"
It can be hard to calibrate for differences in levels of competition or to accept that the nicest, most attractive, and hardest working players have just came up a bit short in the talent lottery.
Strickland, Darby, Pissott and Dunbar were all fan faves whom the coaching staff refused to "free", even though fans saw the hidden potential awaiting to be let loose upon the world.
And yes, coaches do sometimes make mistakes in their assessments but they observe their players day in and day out and have a detailed understanding of what they can and can not do and how they respond to competitive pressures (particularly in respect to other players competing for those minutes).
I think it is very rare a coach would choose not to play a difference maker because they just don't like em.
But this debate will always happen. The fan fave player who is not getting a lot of minutes will be the one player who would make all the key difference if only "freed."
It is a comforting game. Avery Stickland would have led us to a national championship but alas.......
