Game Thread: Lady Vols v Belmont, Home, Thurs. Nov 13th, 7PM, SEC Network

Seeing some examples of why having a public media presence is a no-win situation, regardless of who or what you are.

For a year now we've praised CKC for being so real and unedited in her pressers.
Now we're critiquing her lack of professionalism.

Guess we humans won't be satisfied until AI evolves to where we can put on glasses and see exactly what we want to see.
(If they introduce that technology with mirrors, they'll make a killing.)

If we were making 12 or 13 threes of the 34 a game were taking we would be talking about how great the offense looks. Instead of the 5 to 7 were making a game out of 34 were taking. Talking about another 15 to 18 points a game just by making 5 to 6 more shots which we should be making shooting 34 attempts. 12 is only 35 percent and you see how it changes a game. UT Martin would've been at minimum 87 to 61 and Belmont would've been 83 to 58. We would be undefeated. You take your NIL and find the three point shooters this system must have them to work properly.

So we either have to up out makes to 11 to 13 or quit taking 34 a game that is the choice. Otherwise your struggling to score enough points.
i don't think there's the personnel right now to make all those threes. maybe when players become more comfortable? problem is teams are packing the paint against us and wants us to shoot those

She was given every chance under two coaches. But there's not a role in Caldwell's system for someone whose best role is to stand in a spot to catch and shoot. She found a place where she'll thrive in that role.
For someone from the legal profession, you toss a lot of loose generalizations like "stand in a spot to catch and shoot," and so on. I think we've all heard Coach Kim state her desire to have "a team full of point guards," and other silly things. I do not believe, or, I should say, I truly hope that she is not that naive; but the meaning isn't lost: she wants more athletic players. I do. I think you do. Who doesn't? But, by taking the opportunity to insult a former Lady Vol, you should know that you are, thus, insulting our players.

But, you are not alone: another poster referred to Miss Strickland as a "scrub." Call her what you want. I really don't care. But, to your original description, did you miss the part when Scrubby drove full length and dropped in that buzzer-beater against our vaunted defense? So much for "standing?" Anyhow, setting aside your complimentary words for a former Lady Vol, she and her slow-footed teammates often made us look bad. At least to this point in this particular season, we would be a better team with Avery Strickland.

Let's look at our top 5 volume 3p shooters so far this season:

Cooper 36% - good, keep shooting with same selection
Mia 35% - good, nice looking shooter, 100% green light
Spearman 24% - needs to be much more selective, still shoot if left wide open
Robertson 20% - Historically, there is a lot of evidence that if she keeps shooting, she is a 33% 3P shooter, so I would say, slow it down, but keep shooting when open
Barker 35% - good, keep shooting with same selection

I think our "3P shooting issue" can get turned around. Stick these 5 with Civil, Mia, and Boyd. This should be a really tough team by February.

Civil has made 3 of 5 maybe need a few more from her to see if that is a positive to her game.

The only true issue in what I’m seeing is “overuse”. I understand Coach Caldwell concepts of pressing full-court, 3pt shooting, generating extra field goal attempts, and mass substitution in her system etc.
I just believe there are times in games where a few adjustments will keep teams off balance and not result in uneven play from our players.
The system causes deficits in the production of our players just as much as opponents.
Coach Caldwell is a strong coach. I would say arguably the best recruiter in the SEC right now and it’s not even that close in 20 months in Knoxville.
She does need to meet growth in finding alternatives to her system. All coaches have had to do this. And I don’t think it’s realistic for CKC to expect she doesn’t have to modify this system for the betterment of her players.
GBO🍊.

I wasn’t insulting her, just pointing out what we all knew, which was that she wasn’t a fit for this system. Not every player is a fit for every system. She was a great fit for what Kellie recruited her to do, which was to fill the Tess Darby role of being exclusively a perimeter player that the offense worked to get open and hit for a quick catch-and-shoot three. It’s not Avery’s fault that the system changed to one that doesn’t mesh with her skill set.

That said, I disagree that this team would be better this year having a player that doesn’t do what the system needs. She’s found a great landing spot that will showcase her skills and rely on those skills.

You aren’t wrong. The players that transferred from Tennessee this spring including the guard from Belmont wouldn’t even be in the rotation with this roster.
Anyone that says we would be a better team (which is basically a team 3 points) from being undefeated with a player that would be 14th on the depth chart is just talking to stir up negativity and criticize Tennessee current players.
Belmont as a WBB program year in and year out has competed with P5 teams in the SEC early in the season. They beat Ole Miss years ago.
Almost beat Tennessee in the NCAA tourney.
Tennessee biggest issue right now is a shooting slump and the mass substitution pattern. I have no issue with Coach Caldwell playing 11-12 players. The issue is subbing 5 in and 5 out for 4 quarters.

I'm happy for her like most LV fans.

When running the half court offense we have several standing and waiting for a shot right now. We just do not have players consistently making a shot. A Jewel or Tess type of player would definitely help the offense at this point in the season. Even to free up space in the middle.

Really wish we had picked up Ashton Judd, could have used her shooting a lot more than Texas. She would have had a lot more opportunity at Tennessee as well.

I sort of agree …. Avery (Ace) is a local girl ! She was not originally recruited by UT but played a year somewhere else. Don’t remember where ? But she came to us when Kelly was coaching and was still a substitute player then and in my opinion always a substitute…. That’s not a bad thing , just a realization that everyone has different athletic talents. Belmont played a zone defense with all five players with one foot in the lane ! Basically letting us beat ourselves. Considering our shooting percentage… that was working for 2nd and 3rd quarters. But we finally made a few threes in the fourth quarter and overcame our Inebtness! If you remember the first quarter is how the whole game should have went ! But we went cold from three and couldn’t make a basketball..: so we won by ten but could have been 20–30 if we had played the whole game like our first quarter. Avery played a good game and being familiar with our court was a plus for her shooting. She is a decent player and can contribute to any team . But she has limited athletic talent and a good teammate. Did she not already graduate? Just my opinion

P.S. she didn’t start for Belmont!

I always thought Avery didn’t get a fair shake at Tennessee because every time that kid entered the game she brought a level of energy and desire that not even most of our stars had.

Some are going to think after reading this that I just damaged any credibility I may have had as a judge of talent in saying this, but I think Avery would have done just fine in this system. The girl is like Civil in that she never gets tired. And she is a swarmer! She had a knack for being where the action was happening, and I never understood why folks didn’t see/appreciate that.

The other night I cheered so hard every time she made a great play/shot. Like krich, I thought that full-length drive to end the half with a layup was special.

I wish she were still a Lady Vol because I think we could use her this season. I said what I said.

I think we tried for her she didn't like us. We also tried for a couple others who went elsewhere. It is someone we need to recruit and lock up in the future whether portal or high school. System just not effective on offense without that shooter who also needs to be athletic enough to defend and get to basket.

Judd came from a Missouri team that was one of the worse teams in the SEC.
Only on this board would 2 fans try to make her sound like a difference maker on a team with only 1 loss to a Top 10 team on their homecourt by 3 points in a game where Tennessee led for most of the contest.
Tennessee signed the #1 transfer portal class and #1/#2 high school recruiting class.
So we never tried for all these mythical players and they went somewhere else.
The players on this roster are the players the team need. It’s why the coaches are figuring out how to implement the players into this program and currently sit at #12 in the country while doing so with the #7 2026 recruiting class incoming.
Leave the recruiting up to the recruiters.
They are great at their jobs.

Point proven. Leave the recruiting to the recruiters. With that being said, watching the Notre Dame vs Michigan game. Two Top 20 teams.
I am quite sure ND fans are not happy with the results in this game but won’t be calling for a roster overhaul and bashing most of the team as well as Coach Ivey for every decision made as if this one game in November will determine the Irish entire season.
In the Belmont vs TN game, I love the grit and intensity that was on display in that game. It will help this LV team having faced that kind of challenge early in the season.
Great day to kick back and watch basketball & football!

"Quite sure" ?
You should read "romper room", which is ND's game thread. Their fans are talking mutiny.
