Need to win some ball games and be no worse than 30 and 11 come next Monday. Hopefully 31 and 10 but no more than one loss this week.

I forgot to put in that A&M is ranked 11th in the Nation and the Lady Vols are still ranked 16th

If the pitching and fielding don't get any better, the hitting will have to win some games. In the series at Missouri, Tennessee had the bases loaded 7 different times and scored a total of 7 runs - an average of 1 run per bases loaded situation. A timely hit in a couple of those situations could have pushed across a bunch of runs.

I don't understand why they don't score more off of the bases loaded Jeff

Beat KSU 8-0 in five innings....Gaffin started and got the win...Moss pitched the 5th....Overstreet hit a grand slam...defense was great...Leach made several nice plays... Texas A&M this weekend...one of the best batting teams in the country...lets get another home sweep Lady Vols!

Why would you start Gaffin against Kennesaw State when Moss and Bush need work? (I know Moss pitched one inning.) To keep Gaffin sharp? Seemed a bit of an odd decision.

Also, our hitting is going to be weakened if McSwain is not a regular. She got off to a slow start this year, but was getting it together and is a pretty good stick, with some power. With Lockman and Geathers not hitting, and McSwain not playing, we're missing some punch in the bottom half of the lineup.

With Lockman and Geathers not hitting, and McSwain not playing, we're missing some punch in the bottom half of the lineup.

Karen Weekly addressed that in the postgame interview on the radio broadcast. She said with them fighting for a top-16 seed to host regionals, they simply can't afford to drop one of these midweek games so they start either Erin or Rainey to set the tone until the offense can give them a cushion. Unfortunately, the offense has been slow to do that and they haven't been able to get as many quality innings for Moss and Bush as they would like. Even the big midweek wins (other than Belmont) have been because of late scoring explosions.

As for McSwain, there's just no place to put her in the field. She's only made 5 errors at third base, but has made numerous mental mistakes there that have led to runners reaching base. I haven't seen every game, but any time I watch, she looks like she has no idea what she's doing over there, despite having played the position for much of last year. Just hasn't gotten any better. I don't know that the coaches can teach the instincts necessary to "get" everything about situational baseball/softball to make her effective there. She played in the outfield some last season and wasn't good. If you have her in the DP spot, then you have to put either Aucoin or Gaffin in the field. Aucoin can't catch the ball at first, so to have both bats in the lineup, you have to pick your potential disaster.

Better chance that Geathers regains her hitting touch, she's still among the SEC leaders in doubles, than McSwain learns how to play an adequate third base.

Thanks, Deerpark. That pretty much sums it up and I am in agreement with the minor exception of wanting to see Moss a bit more.

I think the time is coming that they're going to start rolling her out to start in Sunday games and let Gaffin and Gabriel clean up the end of those games rather than the other way around.

I don't know how anyone in softball/baseball cannot know what they're doing in the field. It's not exactly rocket science.

Those instincts in my opinion are not taught this late in the players life. They are formed starting in the first year of playing and in most baseball players even before then in my case in the yard. I do not know when Scarlett began playing but she must have played a lot because of her high school and summer ball programs. I have seen all the games they play that is available to be seen and I even noticed last year the reflexes were not what you would expect. This year I have noticed more of the deer in the headlights look than last year. Third base is a reflex position and mostly you have it or you don't. The little things seem to affect her a lot. I would expect she is a fine young lady and certainly an asset to the team and hopefully it will click for her somewhere in the field. I know Leach is at 2nd but I am sure Scarlett has been used there under the Weeklys during practice. Maybe 1st base. I was hoping her bat would come alive again but sometimes the defense affects the offense. I am pulling for her!

When there are base runners and less than two outs, McSwain clearly gets confused. A runner on third and less than two out situation stands out particularly - more than once I have seen her try to decide if the runner from third is going and then makes the wrong decision. As Ralph has said, you have to know what you are going to do before the ball is ever hit to you. For whatever reason, in those situations McSwain periodically doesn't.

I don't think McSwain is tall enough to play first. I would like for her bat to come alive, however.

Good grief: Runner on third, less than two outs, you grab the grounder, glare at the runner on third, which should stop her cold, and then fire to first. If she runs you throw home and take away the run. You don't have much margin for indecision in women's fast-pitch because the bases are so close to the plate and a quick runner can get to first in a hurry, and I can see if it's a high hopper or slow roller one might have indecision. I mean, how many times have seen batters in softball hit a routine grounder and beat the throw to first? A lot--it's one of the peculiar things about the sport. There can always be a bit of indecision when the grounder is such that it makes getting an out--either at first or home--problematic. You do have to have scenario's in your mind before the ball comes to you. We'll see if the changes pan out this weekend

McSwain is listed at 5'9" with Lockman 5'8" and Aucoin 5'11" and Gaffin is 5'10". So I think the height is not that big of a deal although it is a help. Another head scratcher to me on many occasions out fielders do not ever look to get the lead runner at 2nd. I know that getting a out is paramount but often the best and easiest throw is to 2nd. Maybe the coaches are not comfortable with Leach handling the ball around the bag yet.

infield defense has been lacking lately, way to many errors on simple plays for some reason

You're right, she's a tad taller than she looks. I guess it's that slender frame she has. She just seemed shorter to me.

The softball team really needs to win the series vs A&M this weekend. Although they are currently in 4th place in the standings with a 7-5 record, that is misleading. They are tied for 8th place in the loss column as there are a bunch of teams with 5-4 records.

Full Standings
Florida 9-3
Auburn 9-3
Kentucky 8-4
Tennessee 7-5
Texas A&M 5-4
Alabama 5-4
Georgia 5-4
Missouri 5-4
Ole Miss 4-5
LSU 5-7
South Carolina 2-7
Mississippi State 2-7
Arkansas 0-9

LSU is ranked 9th in the country yet 10th in the SEC. :)

I fully expect us to win the series, if not get a series sweep, against TAMU this weekend. Go Vols. #BEATTAMU
