Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 11

That is a really long post but.....Tennessee just played a bad game that is all....to say Gasso develops players better than Ralph and Karen is a personal choice....The India Chiles and Kenora Posey's...tell me they can develop no body players too....also took Erin and had to relearn a new pitching technique

Also they all recruit the same players

...I am confused by a statement by Coach Ralph Weekly that TN had scouted Parker and had a game plan that, if followed, would have worked. I have yet to put my finger on that one. Being down 3-0 that early in the game isn't reason to scrap the plan...

I think he meant the batter's abandoned the plan, not the coaches.

Oh, not saying the Weekly's don't develop their players, seems that this year seems to be taking tad bit longer.

I wasn't sure if Coach Weekly meant they, the coaches or they, the batters got out of the plan. I was pretty certain the coaches wouldn't have scrapped it, but one never knows. I would have been very surprised if they had.

DeerPark12 or anyone else. I understand that Morrison is redshirting. Any other known redshirting/
Just wondering!!

Kelsey Morrison and Taylor Rowland are both redshirting due to injuries.

Our team needed a breather where Oklahoma gets them almost every week. It is much simpler to name the bad teams in the SEC-Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss than the good teams. And, you could tell our team came out with very little focus and Oklahoma was pumped.

Auburn is the #2 team in the country and Ole Miss has a top-25 ranking in the RPI.

Arkansas and South Carolina are really the only "bad" teams in the conference.

Thanks for the clarification. But would you then consider Monica Abbot not elite since she didn't win a national championship either?? Yes or no?

Ivey and Ellen together could've won a national championships in 2013 and deserved better.

Winning a national championship not only requires elite level of skill/talent/coaching but a little bit of luck as well. In both 2007 and 2013, I'd say TN was a bit unlucky. :p

Yes she is elite. Teams that beat Tennessee that year were beating us by 1-2 runs for the most part. Our problem that year was pitchers stymied our offense. Abbott pitched phenomenally versus Arizona in the final, she just couldn't get any help from our bats.

Deer Park said it better than I can in his last post. The elite reinvent themselves year after year. Our pitchers really haven't shown that ability.

Missouri finishes the sweep of A&M routing them 7-1. They could well end the SEC 15-9 as they have winnable series's against MSU and SC to end the season. Tennessee must win 4 of 6 to avoid a tie with Missouri.

Florida.........15-3
Auburn.........15-3
Kentucky......14-7
Alabama.......12-6
Tennessee....12-6
Georgia........9-9
Ole Miss.......9-9
LSU.............10-11
Missouri........9-9
Texas A&M....6-12
S Carolina.....5-13
Miss State.....3-15
Arkansas.......1-17

I think what is going on with Florida is that their coaching staff has developed a program for their pitchers that is getting phenomenal results. Lauren Hager didn't reinvent herself, she improved herself. Walton talked about it and Hager talked about it but they didn't describe specifically what it is other than that it involves off season fitness training and drills and now all their pitchers are doing it. She claimed it helped with her control and accuracy more than anything and her ability to locate all her pitches. I am not overall impressed with our pitching coach.

The problem Renfro sisters specifically Ellen started having was control issues. She constantly got behind in the counts and that gives hitters big advantages. I'd love to see us improve our pitching staff.

Tim Walton used to be an assistant under Patty at Oklahoma. I was able to attend a coaches clinic in Charlotte this past January where Patty was in attendance. She and Time are both phenomenal individuals (as are Ralph and Karen). Patty has some great instructional videos out there as well.

The differences in the coaching fraternity in college softball is so interesting to me as compared with womens basketball--its so less rancorous and with a lot less dirty recruiting, if any exists at all.

Yeah it is. The coaches seem to all get along and they really seem to have all the players' best interests at heart. They have pressure to win though so I don't see Walton sharing some of his finer discoveries with his brethren.

One example of what I'm talking about is Florida's Gourley. Sure she was a good pitcher in HS but when she got to Florida it seemed most teams including us hit her pretty well. The difference in her now is incredible. Her control and spin has improved substantially. Our pitchers do seem to improve for the most part but not nearly at the level of what Florida is achieving. Walton is on to something.

Yes and I almost missed your point about the Oklahoma connection. The Oklahoma pitcher Parker reminded me a lot of Gourley. Same level of control and spin.
