HOOPS CENTRAL: LADY VOLS AT NO. 21/22 TEXAS A&M

February 19, 2019
Story Links

Girls,

To stop a pattern you have to start a pattern....This last game we were stronger in Q3 than I have seen all year (for a close-score game that is). This has to continue, we cannot be predictable. If teams know that we are weak in anything, they will key in on that thing. You left them nothing to look at except for the slow start and CHW used a timeout to wake you girls up, and look what happened....We went into Q4 with no blaring runs preceding it...(Way to go Holly...My compliments)...TAMU came out against MS with a 24-20 Q1 and failed to score 20 in any quarter thereafter, so if you start slow, there is a definite pattern that THEY are trying to break. TAMU has lost 2 of its last 3, so they will be mad for this game...A loss could drop them out of the top 25. Do not be bullied.

Carter must be frustrated defensively. Every touch for her has to be like she is punching a time-clock and having to work for it. Meme and Zay should tag-team her for the duration with off-the-ball full denial... Shut carter down. To do so, you have to interrupt her good mood. Like some of our recent "team jumpers", she doesn't handle frustration well...FRUSTRATE HER!!!

I am proud of you girls. Winners of 6 of your last 7 and following the loss with multiple wins is what is expected, and very appreciated.
But don't get complacent.

"Good enough", is never, good enough,
Coach J

Q3 crash
Carter has 28
Not good enough
Used one timeout in a 17 pt loss

Guard Carter without fouling. 117 free throws made this season. If you let her get to the line your in trouble. 432 shots for 487 points or 1.13 per shot attempt. You take away the free throws 370 points on 432 shots 0.85 per attempt. If we can guard her without fouling and she shoots her season average of 38 percent from the field think we'll win. She has excellent support from their post player but not to much after that as Carter is usually taking most of the shots averaging right at 20 per game.
Carter will definitely be the deciding factor whether they win or not if she is efficient they probably win if not say 30 shots for 22 points we should win the game.

A win here pushes our seed in the NCAA up to around 6. A loss were still in but hanging on a thread again.

I could have said nearly what you said Roller! I am one who thinks if she would forget hair time and go back to how she started which looked great she would be much better. My favorite of the new ladies but Holly needs to someway help her confidence with more opportunites. She at times looks like a deer in a headlight. I think she has a good shot and will come around if not this year but next year. Needs to work hard this summer on her shooting and defenseeeeeeeeeee as they all should . She can be special but: JMHO as always!

I hope Holly keeps the starting lineup of C. Green, Davis, Z. Green, Westbrook and Jackson. Although, she might consider starting Collins instead of Jackson to add some more offensive punch to the lineup. However, she should not do this if it lessens the defensive effort of the starting lineup.

Thanks Coach for all your work and super analysis. The ladies can beat A&M but must contain Carter to some degree, she can't be stopped unless she stops herself, control the other players' production, control the boards, make sensible shots and make their layups. Carter can be frustrated and when she is she makes a lot of stupid fouls. Also a lot of times her defense is only adequate at best. A player like Z. Green may be able to drive her into an adverse foul situation. She also gets upset if she doesn't get the ball. If we play the same harassing defense we played against Missouri I believe we have a ligament shot. If we win this one and can beat Mississippi and Vandy, fairly convincingly, it might not matter what we do against USC, unless they blow us out. If we win the rest of our conference games, I believe we are a lock. To be sure of an NCAA bid, it would be nice if the ladies could pick up a couple of wins in the SEC tourney. That would probably give us a fairly good seeding. I believe the NCAA committee wants the Lady Vols to be part of the tournament, at this point that is really in our hands.

The LVs need this win. Barring getting to the finals of the SEC tourney, which would give them enough quality wins to make the dance, I am guessing that they need to beat everyone on their regular season schedule except for Texas A&M or USC. I would rather see them get the win right now against, the on paper at least, more beatable A&M.

Going down the crazy optimist path, if the LVs were to run the Table and go deep into the tourney, they might be able to grab a 5 or 6 seed . Given their mid season collapse, to have a decent seed within their sphere of control is something I hope the team can rally around.

I am looking for Jackson to find her offensive groove during this closing stretch and start scoring in double digits.

Something has taken meme out of her game. I don't know what it is, but it needs to get fixed before the end of the season

I wonder if it is the pressure of her being the 4th year player? She should be the leader, but maybe isn't ready for the role--"should" vs "is"

I took a look at the Tennessee and Texas A&M teams scoring average per attempted shot. Also the starter turnovers to assists ratio.

Carter is averaging 1.13 points per shot attempt taking 20 shots per game. She had 76 turnovers and 80 assists.
Wells is averaging 1.35 points per attempt on 10 shots per game is a lot more efficient than Carter 60 turnovers and 50 assists.
Johnson 1.30 per attempt on 9 shots per game 34 turnovers and 14 assists
Jones 1.13 per attempt on 6 a game 45 turnovers and 28 assists
Washington 0.96 points per attempt on 5 shots per game 53 turnovers and 77 assists.

Carter falls to 0.85 per attempt just on field goal shooting alone so she is getting about 6 points a game on average from the line. Really need to try to guard her without fouling I know that id difficult to do. The starters are averaging 50 shots per game. Carter taking 40 percent of the starters shots. Wells 20 percent. Johnson 18 percent. Jones 12 percent. Washington 10 percent.

The stats say Wells and Johnson are very efficient when they are shooting the ball this may be some effect from Carter getting them easy looks. We'll have to hope Carter shoots her usual 38 percent from the field and puts up about 25 shots or more in the game. Regardless we need her to be on her 38 percent for the season from the field and not have one of her 50 percent games. The ideal would be for her to have one of her 25 percent games. She is a talented player that doesn't always play in the team concept and sometimes will take a lot of bad shots. That is the player were hoping for tonight.

I checked out our players as well

Evina 1.20 per attempt 13 shots per game 128 assists and 77 turnovers
Davis 1.20 per attempt 12 shots per game 32 assists and 58 turnovers
Jackson 1.24 per attempt 9 shots per game 47 assists and 50 turnovers
Z. Green 0.95 per attempt 11 shots per game 59 assists and 48 turnovers
C. Green 1.34 per attempt 6 shots per game 23 assists and 42 turnovers

The starters are averaging 51 shots per game. Westbrooks taking 25 percent, Davis 24 percent, Jackson 18 percent, Z. Green 22 percent, C. Green 11 percent. I think we would've liked for C. Green to be at a lot higher percentage but her inability to catch the ball has really hindered the inside game.

They rebound at 42 a game and we go 45 a game. This game seems to be determined on what kind of game Carter has. She has played very badly this season and also very well. Gonna be a close one for sure.

I don't think it's that, because I am sure that Meme was looking forward to being the leader this season. I think someone told her to concentrate on only one or two things and it's taken her off her entire game I think that's what's happened. Because if you compare her play and the statistics is she got in games starting this season compared with now you'll see more fouls, less points more turnovers less assist. Something is dictating her game...She has more game than that

If Jackson can be a defensive stopper the rest of the season she will have been a great player for us. I am not concerned that she took five shots in the game because she kept a player capable of scoring thirty under control for a large part of the game. If the Refs would've called some of the times Cunningham fouled her while being guarded Cunningham would've been out of the game. I figure Jackson May draw Carter tonight to begin the game and if all her effort and concentration has to go to keeping her in check and she can do that regardless of whether she scores a point herself she will have done a fabulous job for the team. Very proud of the game she played against Missouri can only hope she can give us what she gave us there tonight.

Better competition.

I totally agree Jackson's greatest contribution most likely will be defense, starting tonight against Her Majesty of the Torn Curtains. We know Carter is cantakerous, get under her skin! It would be a bonus if MeMe scored double digits but I sure wouldn't count on it. Her defensive contribution could be huge though.

Tamika, awwwwww. Takes me back to the good ole days! Ya'll remember how great 39-0 felt? Remember when they used to ask if the LVs were so good they were bad for the game? Remember that time the Meeks and gang beat Vandy by 50 at the SEC tourney at the Roundhouse? Memories . . .

Biggest keys to the game IMO:

1. Let Carter beat herself, no secret she is a volume shooter with a low percentage. If we can keep her in front and force her to take long, contested jump shots she will play herself out of the game mentally in the first half. Those bad shots will be transition offense for us. If we allow her to get to the rim she can finish with the best of them and draws contact well, she will make a living at the line.

2. Pressure the ball when it goes into Well's hands, she had 8 turnovers in the last game and the team had 18 total. Have to pick her up in transition early, most of her points come off easy run out passes from Carter or baseline drives, keep her in front and make her take the jumper.

3. Have to put a body on the big girls, both of their posts, Jones and Johnson are excellent rebounders. We win the battle in the paint, we win the game.

4. Rennia needs to get a touch on almost every possession. She has been scoring well lately and she draws a lot of defensive attention which lets us cut more freely. I don't feel like A&M has anyone on their team that matches up well with her defensively. Should be a match-up problem for them all night if we can get her the ball.

5. Evina needs to attack the basket and FINISH. If she'll take the ball hard to the rim like she has been Carter will pick up fouls right and left, she isn't disciplined enough to not try to block her shot and leads A&M in total fouls on the season. 2 quick fouls in the first half and she'll be mentally gone for the rest of the game.

6. Our bigs should have an advantage in transition their big girl, Johnson, is a load but she is also slow. C. Green should be able to beat her town the court for some easy buckets if she'll run the floor hard.

7. Have to have 1 bench player step up tonight, whether it is KK or Collins like last time out, we've got to get double digits from at least one reserve and they have to rebound hard while they're on the floor.

Jones is 6-2 also and a better rebounder then Rennia so Holly might start KK at the 5 and move C.Green to the 4. I think Holly will need to use everyone tonight

Jones does not guard well on the perimeter. If she’s on Rennia it will affect her rebounding numbers as well, pull her out of the paint and open up the lane for the o-board and stick back.

i agree Jones does not guard well on the perimeter, But when we are on the defensive end we will need to keep her off the offensive glass. As for Collins i think she get`s into foul trouble because she try and block shots she has no chance of blocking.

I also want to see Zay on her.

I coached a kid very much like Zay in Atlanta. Other players hated to be guarded by Sarika because she was handsy off the ball. (As taught). I told her to invade her opponents space anytime they are off the ball...Touch em, lean on em, Whisper to them, never ever let them rest. . . And full, off the ball-denial.

Sarika would also make them pay with an immediate closeout on any picked up dribble. I told her: If I can get a piece of paper between you two on a closeout, you're not close enough.
