The way Horston is playing right now is hurting us badly 1 for 9 from the field and she still turns it over a lot. She is struggling right now with her game and until she gets to playing better were gonna be challenged against the better teams.

Very disappointing loss. Worth it if staff and team uses it as a wake-up call and acts quickly to improve in the many weak areas.

Worst part may not be the loss but the bad impression given to the five excellent recruits sitting in the stands.

Hopefully, the new possible recruits were impressed with the crowd, and with the fact that we need them, and that they will get to play if they can score and play defense, and that Kellie Coaches in a positive way.

    • Consistent Bench Play: Sophomore Rae Burrell and Kasiyahna Kushkituah each finished the day in double figures with 18 and 13 points, respectively. It marked the fourth-straight game the pair had come off the bench to contribute double-digit points.
    • Rae Heating Up: Sophomore Rae Burrell has improved her career high in two straight games, recording 17 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 18 against Air Force. Her previous best was 14 points, initially set against Florida A&M on Nov. 18, 2018, and tied earlier this season against Tennessee State.
    • Balanced Attack: UT finished the day with five players in double digits (Davis, Key, Massengill, Kushkituah, Burrell) and nine of 10 active Lady Vols contributed at least one bucket.

  • HARPER HISTORY IN THE MAKING
    • Kellie Harper coached the 500th game of her head coaching career on Dec. 1, as the Lady Vols defeated Air Force, 81-54, in Knoxville. She improved to 292-208 in her 16th season on the sideline.
    • Kellie Harper will attempt to open a season 8-0 for the first time in her head coaching career. She twice opened 4-0 at NC State in 2011-12 and 2012-13 before topping that with a 7-0 start at UT this season.
    • On Nov. 18, 2019, Kellie Harper became the 40th person to play for and coach an AP-ranked women's basketball team when UT debuted at No. 23.
    • She became the 13th person to accomplish that feat at the school where she also played.
    • According to Hoops Guru Mel Greenberg, UT and USC are the only schools with two alums to accomplish that feat. Harper and Holly Warlick did so at Tennessee, while Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooper-Dyke did so at Southern Cal.

    • Hawaii held Texas without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Rainbow Wahine defeated the Longhorns, 73-60, in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown last Sunday afternoon in Honolulu.
    • Hawaii (4-4) hit 10 of 19 three pointers and made 21 of 24 free throws. Texas (4-4) led by three at the end of the third period, but Hawaii outscored the Longhorns, 28-12, in the fourth quarter.
    • Charli Collier scored 18, Joyner Holmes 17 and Celeste Taylor 13 for Texas. Amy Atwell scored 24 for Hawaii, which included a 9-of-14 performance from three-point territory and six-of-seven from the free-throw line.

Scouting report:
We won't play the game that Hawaii did to beat Texas (10-19 shooting 3 ptrs), we will beat them with depth. TX has four players over 6' and only two of them are primaries: Joyner-Holmes 6'3" and Collier 6'5"...These two also account for nearly half of the total rebounds for TX team...We have to block out and shut these two down. Aside from them, only Sug Sutton (27-15 asst-TO) worries me. She is the type of player that I see going off for a career high. (Shut her down JH and JM!!) Beyond these 3 and Higgs and Taylor, there is no bench.

TX shoots a measly % from 3, so that doesn't worry me. The ones coming off the bench are the ones we have to kind of worry about when it comes to the 3. I saw a couple of them with pretty good numbers. But I believe they're just there to be shooters
TX shoots six 3's a game, and averages 42 Rebs (half of which will be JH and Collier)
Tx is averaging 17 TO's a game

All this doesn't influence me as much as their Coach, Karen Aston. Her last presser reminded me a little of CHW's...right to the scratching and the "need to push the ball inside" verbalization. In this ol coach's opinion, we should manhandle Texas (on paper), however, on the court we better treat them like what they were not what they have been recently. Because TX will play us like we are Tennessee!

I see UT winning 85-60 with the game much closer in the onset and distancing as TX, who has little depth, tires.

Before we naysayers start our indictment of our coaches and players, we must realize that we are young, we are going to make foolish mistakes, and these were the best players we have faced. Yes, we missed far too many easy shots, we missed far too many free throws, we made some very poor decisions, and we were poor guarding the back door, however, these types of things plague young teams. There were some positives, we came back from 12 down and most of all, we did not give in and we did not give up.

According to Carolyn Peck, KJH told her that she wanted to scheduled tougher competition, without worrying so much about getting easy wins. KJH feels that you learn from tougher competition earlier on.

Am I not happy about the ladies losing, no, however, this was a test against the best competition we have faced this year. We will learn from this and be more prepared for the next tough competition, which happens soon against Stanford.

If you are not ready for a few more tough games that will test our young talent, you might want to jump off the bandwagon now. This team is going to need room and time to grow. What we need to look for now is growth.

The big girls are slow, don't jump and rebound with two hands. The rest move like the have lead in their feet and play out of control. They will get better.

Just getting back to my coach. Could not watch game. Will review stats but seemed like low fg% and low ft%. I’m going to guess our achielles heel low A:T was a culprit

The only player on the team who is consistent on passing to the bigs on time and in the right way is the little Aussie guard. She moves the ball on O but is deficient on D. IMHO, she should play more.

Just got time to watch game replay and I have not read any comments here yet. From my viewpoint we played a decent first quarter and not so well the other three. Not going to throw anyone under the bus yet. If Horston does not do something positive soon she will be a disappointment for the # 1 player in the country. Appears like Davis with the moody expressions and attitude. When Davis wants to concentrate and play she can but she seldom does that consistently. Mass has improved a little bit and if she everrrrrrrrrrrr works her shot out she will be a good point. Brown is doing about as well as she can I think. I was expecting more out of McCoy and Rennie but yet to be shown. KK is KK and is looking a little better each game. Karmela is steady which is a plus since she has been in the program forever. Tonia goes in and out of touch and plays that way but she is our player that has to perform better every game. Rae is still in a china shop most of the time but she is our best shooter and she has not seen a shot she don't like. I actually wondered why she was not playing the last several minutes when we needed to catch up. We will not get a smell at Stanford or UConn because we are not very good right now. We should win as many as we lose this year but I don't see much more. This is JMHO as always!! SS

People just need to calm down a little. It was a disappointing loss but didn't really surprise me. We weren't going undefeated this season with this group of players. Let's see if the team progresses or regresses during the year before we fire the coach, dismiss all the players and start from scratch. We showed some fight and came back but stupid plays toward the end cost us. Young players do that when it gets hectic. The game will slow down a little for them later in the year hopefully and they will play their best ball when it really counts.

This team is poorly coached , do they even have any offensive sets ? just come down and shoot 3s. This looks a lot like Hollys teams. They will not win too many games.

You know, we can keep beating a dead horse with the weak schedule, should have’s, what could’ve been done better in the game, etc, but all that is in the past. What good is it harping over the schedule? It’s a done deal, and is too late to change! We still have stiff competition coming with UCONN AND STAN. We must not overlook anyone, despite who they have lost too, or what record they have. A team with only wins cannot learn if they don’t have things to grow on, like a loss. Perhaps, this will cause the team to become hungrier. Remember a couple years ago when we went 15-0 to begin the year? We ended up with a pretty bad record after such a great start. We’re 7-1, and it’s still early in the year. Texas is a talented team, and they were hungrier tonight than us. Let’s move on and regroup for Colorado State! Go Vols!

Just got back from this one. I am still ... disappointed ... in all the transition shots taken without numbers. I don't know why anyone goes in against two or three defenders and takes a shot; you have no rebounding support, low chance of retrieving a missed shot, and the odds of a make are poor with all those bodies between you and the basket. And yet -- it kept happening. A few key possessions that ended early in the shot clock with a missed three; feels like there should be some accountability when that happens. Some weird zone decisions on defense that left shooters wide open. Thought UT played out of control for large stretches of the second and third quarter on offense, though they focused and played much better defensively in the second half and improved until that last six point lead forced their hand. There was a moment around the 6 minute mark in the fourth quarter when Texas made a shot or two and I checked to see if Tennessee had all their timeouts; they did. Really hoped they'd use one of the timeouts there and give themselves a chance to breathe.

And in in spite of all this, Tennessee would have won if they'd made their free throws. I don't know what else to say about it. Texas was not a great team today. A good team would have beaten Texas. Tennessee has some work to do if they want to be a good team. They are not without talent and ability. They look at times like they can improve. I hope they do.
