Game Thread: #15 Lady Volunteers 4-1 vs Coppin St. 1-4 Sunday, 11-23-25 @ 2:00PM EST Knoxville, TN. SECN+

In regards to Coop today. I think she’s been fighting a bug now for a couple of weeks. We all know that feeling. In terms of her performance, we are so use to seeing her put on a dynamic espn hi lite show performances that when she quietly contributes to the team, we overlook it. She will be fine I’m certain. And as some posted here; she got others involved. That goes along with coach saying she was becoming a leader.

Out of 26 missed threes, 13 were rebounded by the Lady Vols. Removing those from the denominator, Tennessee hit 14/27 [denominator being 'makes and CSU dRBs'] for an APA-adjusted 52% from three. Very solid rebounding day, hopefully we can get anywhere even close to that against the Bruins.

Gotta work on making more out of those rebounds, tho. Only 14 second chance points on 18 oRBs.

And we still could have a rebounded it better! The first 4-5 minutes of the first quarter we weren’t rebounding at all. That’s what earned them the timeout and the butt chewing. Nice to see that the team responded after that.

this is where I think a high offensive rebound number is misleading.
For a team to get an offensive rebound a shot has to be missed
against a team like this,,,no problem, but?

In the win over Coppin State, Nya Robertson tied her career-high with 32 points, hitting ten three-pointers. The ten threes are the most in a single game in Tennessee Women’s Basketball history.
That record stat needs to be touted throughout the recruiting social network, because there's this rumor that shooters won't come to play in this system because they get subbed out before they can get into a rhythm.

Certainly. The point isn't that a missed shot that is rebounded is a good thing** just that it's a not-bad thing. And to not take that into consideration [which almost everyone does, because what traditional stats giv you is devoid of that important context] is to develop an inaccurate impression of the value of the 3-point shot in basketball [particularly System basketball] when a team is winning the offensive rebounding battle.

**unless the rebound's in a spot where it's an easy putback for 2, in which case the miss is a "de facto pass inside", as I like to put it, which is very good thing: a "pass" which had a chance for being 3 points. That's such a high-value play that, if you 'putback-2-off-3-attempt' at any kind of decent rate [+and1 sometimes], that's a foundation for a very efficient high-scoring offense, which System teams tend to be. [and it's also the reason why the scoring drops so sharply when they face a team that denies them the boards well; just gotta make up for it by being even better in the press]

EDIT: I'll add, there's some insight here to be gained about certain players, e.g. Zee, are even worse perimeter shots than others than the percentages might imply, because not only is a Zee 3PA a lower percentage shot than some other players, but you cannot hav Zee attempting the 3 AND also hav Zee in the paint for the rebound. [and I'd say most woud agree that we want Zee inside, not outside, on most of our 3PAs]

Our leading rebounders' best chance at a rebound is when anyone is shooting the 3 besides them.

AI on good shooting form:
"Good basketball shooting relies on a balanced stance, proper hand placement, and a smooth, consistent motion from legs to follow-through. Key rules include keeping your feet shoulder-width apart and slightly staggered, aligning your body and elbow with the basket, and using your legs to generate power. Follow through by extending your shooting arm and flicking your wrist, keeping your index finger pointing at the hoop after releasing the ball."

Jada Civil shooting and making (on the follow through after being fouled):

I haven't observed them .....have you ?

I'm not knowledgeable enough to identify exact differences, but I see different results. Sometimes they're all over the ball in the back court. Sometimes it seems that only one is trying to pressure the ball handler. And sometimes I've felt they were running a more defensive press, looking for opportunities, but not taking as many risks and getting back on defense. Could be just different execution or effort by players. I just don't know enough to analyze (and, sometimes, it's hard to see enough of the floor on tv to be sure, I suspect).

I've seen straight man-to-man, immediate trap, delayed trap, and a fake trap switch. There is also a trap at the half-court line that they do from the man-to-man press.

The almost quadruple double was very impressive. I thought she gave great effort and made it look effortless.
Agree, Cooper is so athletically talented that everything she does makes it look effortless so you may think she is not playing hard but not many can do what she does at her level.

I also think she's a much smarter player this year, which also makes her play look a bit more effortless.

As long as there is a Tennessee there will be negative recruiting. The wbb world is always terrified of waking the sleeping giant.

Baylor (who sucks anyway) is a school I’ve consistently heard runs their mouth recruiting negatively against us.

Have heard that about Kara and Duke as well.

Jsut two pathetic women who can’t coach trying to tear someone else down.

Robertson showcased her excellence with her three-point shooting, yet at times, our overall performance felt disorganized and chaotic. It is essential that we address these inconsistencies. Furthermore, Cooper, despite coming close to a triple-double, did not seem fully engaged in the game. As a team, we have yet to reach our full potential.

We must also be more discerning in our shot selection, focusing on opportunities from the elbow and driving toward the basket. Our three-point shooting has not matched the level we achieved last season by this period of time. I attribute much of this to the caliber of teams we've faced, aside from NC State, and trying to work younger players into the mix. We are still throwing up three point bricks and being impatient.

However, we are still finding ourselves. I am confident that we will improve as we prepare for our upcoming games against Stanford and UCLA. We are still a work in progress, but better days are ahead.
Honestly, "Coop did not seem fully engaged" has been the recurrent theme of her time as a LV. People said the same about Rickea and before that Rennia Davis. Some players have a calm demeanor and don't show a lot of emotion, Coop is a "cool" player though she went nuts went Nya broke the school record on her pass. In any event, I move that we retire the Coop "did not not look engaged" narrative and replace it with "Coop was calm and poised during the game."

Didn't R Davis have a injury when see got to WNBA.
They found it her WNBA team.
Not sure if Rennia and Tennessee knew about it or not?
Think Tennessee might have known she had a nagging injury.
Pretty sure she might miss some of her first year WNBA?
Because of injury her senior year at Tennessee?

All explained here. Stress fracture that first become a problem in the 2021 NCAA tournament:
