TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 11/12 Tennessee plays its first road contest of the 2023-24 campaign on Thursday, clashing with No. 18/22 Florida State at 6:02 p.m. ET at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.

The Lady Vols are in the final stage of a three-game run over a period of only five days. UT hosted the USA Women's National Team on Sunday (L, 95-59) and Florida A&M (W, 93-64) on Tuesday before flying to the Sunshine State on Wednesday evening.

Interestingly enough, Tennessee is facing its second straight Florida school to open the campaign, and both Florida A&M and FSU are located in the city of Tallahassee.

UT's Kellie (Jolly) Harper (1995-99) and FSU's Brooke Wyckoff (1997-2001) are each leading programs where they played basketball. As a point guard, Harper guided the Lady Vols to an NCAA title three-peat in 1996, 1997 and 1998, including a 39-0 season in '97-98.

This will mark the first meeting between these schools in women's basketball since a Knoxville match-up on Jan. 26, 1986. The teams had played the year before in Tallahassee on Feb. 8, 1985. The Lady Vols won both of those contests.

My big question is whether ta'Niya Latson who is listed day to day w a hamstring injury will play (and who I believe I previously mixed up w the writer Tynisha Coates). I really think that hammy needs at least one more game of rest.

Not sure at all if were ready for an opponent like this on the road. If Latson is able to play we have no one that can guard her and that would cancel out any advantage we have with Rickea Jackson. How many times are we going to turn it over in this game with that perimeter lob to the post? Wells has the right idea commit the defense and then hit the open player with a pass. Not that lob into a triple team. The simple truth is were going to have to score a lot of points in this game to win something over 80 cause as sad as I hate to say it this defense is the same one as last season.

We’ve played one game against an opponent that was an almost guaranteed W. Let’s wait at least a few more games before throwing the towel in on our defense.

We should win this game, as long as Rickea is aggressive and takes between 15-20 shots which should be every game.

Don't think I mentioned anything about throwing in the towel just a truthful statement that the defense is the same. Even Coach Kellie said in the pre-game the defense was not good and we'll continue to work to get better.

Florida State at full strength doesn’t have any player that comes close to canceling out Rickea Jackson. Lets just end that discussion right now.
Second last time I checked Jewel Spear just scored 20 points in her debut with Tennessee and has experience as the top scorer or one of the top scorers for three seasons in the ACC. Any guard on Florida State team has Jewel Spear to worry about as much as TN has to respect them.
In addition, stop disrespecting the talent of Jillian Hollingshead, Sara Puckett, Jewel Spear, Destinee Wells, etc outside of Rickea Jackson.
Latson got cut by Team USA during the AmeriCup trials and Jewel Spear made that team.
Same as the players from LSU outside of AR. It’s about time folks be honest and real instead of trying to discredit these players on TN’s team.
So if our guards can’t guard FSU, they can’t guard ours either. And the defense comes down to the staff and the game plan. It’s a vanilla system. Strictly man to man. With no adjustments or pressure to dictate tempo.

Tough matchup on the road...we shall see what Tennessee is early in season...
We have an advantage in the post for sure and if we can get the ball inside effectively we should win this game. I don't think they are as good a team as last season when they won 14 out of 15 home games. We need a big day on the offensive boards and look for a big game out of Karoline and Jill.

Truth vs opinion? It amazes me that folks who trend negative on here tend to claim they and they alone are speaking the truth. Everyone else is just spouting opinions. SMH.
“Sad to say this defense is the same as last year” etc. seems a little towel throwish to me.
Non throwish would be…. I was disappointed to see our defense look like last year. This obviously will be a needed point of emphasis. Kellie sees this too per her presser.

It may seem towel throwish to you but that would be your opinion as you speak of in this post. I can see the games have a great understanding of what defense looks like and my opinion is that were doing the same things we did last year. Allowing penetration in the paint, getting beat on drives to the basket in one on one defense and not doing a very good job of determining who their three point shooters are. The same girl made four uncontested corner threes.
Finally if you don't like what I post do you even have to respond. I'm going to post what I see and feel about the team not caring where you or anyone else likes it or not. Not breaking any rules and unless you have forgot this is an opinion board.

We could've had something like four turnovers to many bad passes to post players double teamed. 12 turnovers in a game is fine. I still don't like the unforced turnovers and that was over half our total for the night. They didn't make a difference last night . Very well could versus Florida State.

Could not agree more that this is an opinion board. Do get tired of posters who believe their post is not an opinion it is instead the truth.
Anyway, let’s all hope the defense starts coming along. It is early!😆😆

They're off!

Man I'm gonna be nervous AF tomorrow. I've had this game circled for a long, long time. Really need to set a strong tone w a ranked-opponent win on the road.

I’ve been more focused on the Indiana game, but this is a good measuring stick.

Indiana will be the toughest one for sure and I'm excited about it. But I view this game as a big step toward being competitive against Indiana and the others. Get that "can't beat ranked teams" monkey off our back right away.

Doesn't mean the end of the world if we lose, depending on how we lose, but this could be a great launching pad for what's to come.

I’m actually hoping Latson gets to play

Let me just say i won't cry if she doesn't play. I hope the young lady gets healthy but if we win against a ranked opponent there will be no * beside the win lol... if she doesn't play they still have proven threats and can score ball. But i'm expecting her to play but if she doesn't it is what it is and i wouldn't be sad either...

Me exactly! No one will know or care very long if we beat them without her. We just need a big win. You never know w a hammy. Needs extra rest.

A lot of factors figure in on blood clots in the lungs...
Here;s a pretty good article on it.

that's if she actually had a hammie and that wasn't a set up for a whoaaaa she just came back off a hamstring pull or aggregation. Let me just say as a track runner hammies r so tricky if that's what it is. We will be able to tell by how much shoe plays and the way she cuts because she is an aggressive player.

You know we are talking about the Fl St player Latson? They said she had a hamstring issue.
