Watched the game again this morning and in particular, the last play of the game in OT. The Pitt QB Patti threw the last pass about 12" too far in front of the Pitt receiver. 12" to the right, he catches the ball in stride at full speed and has only one UT defender to beat to make it into the end zone - which would have tied the game and forced a second OT. Two of our defenders clearly would have not been a factor in stopping the Pitt receiver if he caught this pass, who was surrounded by UT defenders but, also wide open.

Nail bitter of a game. Told my girlfriend to be ready to punch in 9 1 1 because my heart was nearly outside my body. Soooo happy for the team and vey proud of them and the coaching staff. Nice change for wanting to watch Sports Center on a Sunday morning. Congrats to a fine effort gentlemen.

There was also a play where Barthalomew was wide open and the QB never looked his way. We blitzed from that position. A quick read by the QB gets it done there.

On the above play, all those players could see it developing in front of them and yet they were not proactive. Just watching the play. I give credit to the defense for knocking out the QB, but this back up never posed much of a threat. Explains their offensive drop off. It doesn’t explain ours. I think we have some coaching and scheme deficiencies on defense.

Our entire offense is predicated on tempo and that never really clicked last night.

I don’t see Pitt finishing with more than 8 wins or ranked. And that’s against a joke of a schedule. That WV team they struggled to beat gave up 55 to Kansas and lost. Kansas finished 2-10 last year.

This win is important psychologically, but it won’t look good on paper by year end. Our offense disappeared in the 2nd half. I mean vanished.

Akron will tell us nothing as they are hot garbage. Likely worse than Ball State. Heupel needs to call running plays and force them execute the run game.

He got way to pass happy with his play calling.

Agree. TN offense needs to be able to change it up with tempo. I don’t have the stats in front of me but it appeared the offense struggled after a Pitt defender was injured. And I don’t think there was any flopping. Also, mixing up the tempo will give the defense a chance to take a breath.


The offense itself was concerning. Hooker looked rough during the 1st qtr as he started out 2-8, as mis tosses were overthrown. The slant was there all day but I recall Hooker misfiring at least three times. He regrouped and played well in the 2nd quarter.

2nd half- I don’t know what the issue was. TN ran okay in the 2nd qtr but couldn’t at all in the second half. I was disappointed in the play calls in 3rd downs, as we ran the ball on 3rd and 4 or 5 twice.
Give Pitt credit as their D line pressured Hooker in the second half. I’m just concerned w the running game. Also, FL’ corners may sit on the short routes and take one the other way.

With that said, it’s easy for me to critique from my sofa. The Vols won the game and that’s all that matters. I just want us to improve, beat Florida, and then try to make a run for the East.

the play shown above does show me that the coaches are on it! The two defenders are at least looking right at the goal line. Remember, the goal was the line they had to reach. So long as the receiver catches and rolls around between the five ang goal, then we were good! And if he catches the ball, both could have beat him to the goal line!

Don't forget about the interception - no interception - before half. With the defender being out of bounds by 1/2 inch, it allowed us to kick a FG and go up 7 at half. We were able to "steal" 3 points and the way the game played out, that was huge.
Nonetheless, it is easier to watch game film after a win than a loss, no matter how ugly.

We would of been up by 3 scores IF they had executed those pass play calls.
Wasn’t a problem with playcalling, it was drops , bad throws and penalties getting first down plays called back.
I’ll take the playcalling all day long.
If you want to watch a bunch of running plays go no where, maybe Pruitt will get another HC gig and you can go watch that crap again.

I was commenting on this play in another thread and just found this picture. Yes, if he gets hit in stride it’s almost a certain touchdown. Ifs and Buts though. We scrapped it out and got the W. How many sundays have I pondered how close we came to gritting out a tough win. Feels pretty good. Also told my wife yesterday I was going to up my life insurance payouts this week.

Yep and if we hadn't dropped a TD pass and Hooker had been on target for a couple of deep balls where we had them beat and if the ref would have blown the whistle when their OL had a big handful of jersey, it could have been a blow out

Seems like to me not one of the DB's broke on the ball when it was throw. I know there were other receivers, but they each have a qtr or 3rd to cover in that instance. Also, there's no need to be in the end zone. If he catches it there it too late.

Ifs and buts. Candy and nuts. Why would you assume running plays go nowhere? The lack of running plays is what cost the offense in the 2nd half.

Big plays have big risk and big reward. No symmetry to the play calling. Hyatt was doing some great things on shorter routes, stretching defense to cover wide. No complimentary plays up the middle. Those long throws don’t have a great percentage.

Hooker is taught to read the numbers, and Pitt was stacking the box. So, he’s taught to pass in those situations. He’s given the option. It’s why Hyatt had 11 catches, much of which were LOS passes. Kind of like extended running plays. Specific plays aren’t always what the coach called- just based on defensive alignment.

If you watch the last play, the defender on the left was trailing another WR coming across the opposite way on the field. They were standing at the goal line, which is what they should have done. Defense was very good outside 2 big plays.

That's why you blitz. Make the qb have to throw quick. They had to go 21 yards in one play. The receiver and qb didn't have time to let him get deeper on his route. I was yelling blitz him the whole time. If he makes the right read then good for him. Watched 3rd and Chavis too long to know sitting in a deep zone kills you.

Small averaged 1.7 yards on 10 carries, Hooker 1.8 on 15, Wright 5.2 on 9 but he fumbled again.
Why call more of what’s not working.
Pitts D line is their strength, running the ball is our weakness.
The plays that were called were working when our mistakes didn’t doom them.
