'20 GA QB Harrison Bailey (UT SIGNEE)

stop debating it. its JGs job if you dont like it then dont watch. the rest will compete when hes done

Wrong! It may be his job right now, but there's no guarantee he's starting this year and next. He won the job by default last year because there was nobody to push him for the job. Just ask Kelly Bryant,Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason and forget their names but QB's from Miami, Texas,NDame,Michigan and others. They were starters the previous years and eventually got beaten out by FR that finally pushed them for the starting job. And two of those had taken their teams to the college playoff. Not sure Maurer push's JG, but Shrout definitely will and Maurer possibly will also. Not saying either beat him out, but no starting QB's job is safe these days. Then Bailey comes in next season and he's got elite QB potential. But don't get it twisted, if Shrout or Maurer outperform JG they will start. Again I'm not saying it happens, but he hasn't done enough to just be guaranteed the starting job. He's 2-11 vs the SEC as a starter and 6-13 overall.. Butch isn't here anymore.. He will have to earn it again, especially with a new , no nonsense OC coming in.

Yep a bad quarterback can also make an offensive line look bad
If he can learn to throw before the receivers break and see the opening he would be much better and not take as many hits. Waiting until after the break got him crushed bc that’s an extra second or two he’s holding the ball.

If he's also bad at handling the ball it can get the running backs hit early also

That wasn't the case last year. As the running backs who were hit as soon as they touched the ball 3-4 yards deep in the backfield.

That isn't completely true. Chandler Averaged 5.5 yards a carry, London 4.9 and Jordan 4.0. JG benefitted from a lot of 50/50 Balls going our way because of the receiver's and Chryst did also. Our problems were definitely a combo of the Oline, QB play, especially holding the ball way too long, average RB play with no elite gamechanging RB's, no HR or elite speed at WR. Don't think any one group was to blame more than the other. Changing is going to be what fixes these issues the most. And it's definitely started with the most important piece, the OLine. Bailey is the Elite QB that changes the direction of a team and offense. Still need a bruising type RB to pair with Ty and Gray. Also some changing WR's that keeps Def Coordinators up at night trying to defend. We are changing the roster faster on the defense but hopefully Chaney and Tee paired with Neidemeyer and Johnson will speed that process up. We now have an elite Coaching Staff loaded with elite recruiters on both sides of the ball. No reason we shouldn't end up in or near Top 5 in the '20 class. Plus making a bowl next season and showing improvement will also help immensely.

Our WRs led the SEC in drops. So there is that.

That definitely didn't help either. But on the flip side they bailed JG and Chryst out on god knows how many of those 50/50 balls. Also had to turn defender and keep numerous balls from getting intercepted. Both groups helped and hurt the other various times throughout the season.

True, but you still have to throw the ball regardless of the outcome. I’m just saying if he can throw it before the break he takes less hits probably. If the receiver drops it or breaks wrong then it’s on the receiver not JG.

He definitely could be if they leave him at RB. He seemed destined to end up on defense at LB. That could change now with HT and Crouch coming in. He had some fumble problems too. Will be curious where they have him this spring.

Be a travesty to leave him at lb. Moving a freshman from rb for fumbles is the extreme overreaction.

Agreed! Not sure exactly why he was moved, especially with our lack of RB depth. Especially a RB with Banks size. I hope he turns into that big TV we need. For some reason we can't seem to recruit one with any con. Not sure if it's because Weinke is coaching RB's or not. Although I expect Johnson to move to TN Coach with Tee Coaching WR's. Weinke has Coached QB's and last year RB's and that's it. He didn't even pull his weight as a recruiter, so I'm not sure why he's even still on staff or where CJP could even move him to. Supposedly CJP loves and trusts Weinke so I don't know. Just seems like an opportunity to continue upgrading the football staff.

In the first two offensive possessions against Florida, the Oline was responsible for two turn overs by hittin the RB in the backfiel and causing an interception by tipping a pass before the QB could really get his hands on the ball. The only games where the Oline played fairly well was against Auburn and Kentucky. If you think The Oline preformed well, you did not watch very much of the Tennessee football games last year.

True. But not only did the WRs lead in drops but they didn’t get open consistently either. While JG has his issues, the OL and WRs did him no favors.

Bro you should really read exactly what I said. I never once said the OLine performed well. I said all 3 groups, The OLine,WR's and JG all 3 played equal roles in our offensive problems. I was just pointing out our top 3 RB's averaged 5.5, 4.9 and 4.0 per rush attempt. The OLine struggled more with pass protection than in the run game. And with that JG, the WR's and the OLine were equally to blame for that. The OLine didn't always give JG enough time to get the pass off, JG held the ball too long and was slow making decisions at times, didn't always throw the most catchable ball, the WR's dropped too many passes, couldn't always get open or run routes consistently. The Florida game was definitely a team effort with bad play. The OLine was bad, JG was bad with his decision making. That was just a really bad game all around, especially from the offense.

Y’all- we can say JG was bad AND the OL was bad. They’re not mutually exclusive.

You can also say QBs rarely make a OL look bad but OL can definitely make a QB look bad. Fact.

There were some real positive signs out of JG this year, but that OL definitely hurt him, especially after Trey went out. Same goes for RBs

Good thing the OL will be back bigger and stronger than ever with and solid offseason to work with Friend. I have a good feeling about them this year.
