Let’s say the defense intercepts the ball near the offense goal line, the offense tackles the guy and the ball goes thru the the back of the offense end zone. Who’s ball and where is it spotted?

Whole different scenario. I believe that the current rule is a safety, if the fumble occurred outside the end zone.

If the defense had returned that interception to the one inch line where the ball came out and went out of the back of the defense's endzone... it would be the offense's ball at their own 25...

...it's a dumb rule ...I agree down at the spot of the fumble unless there is a recovery in bounds... it shouldn't matter where on the field you are when the fumble happens

Never mind. I read that wrong.

Down it at the spot of the fumble, so the fumble doesn't add any yardage.
Isn’t this exactly what would happen at any other location on the field? I have never understood why the fact that the ball happened to roll out on one side of the pylon vs the other should make any difference in possession. I hate that rule.

I say give a loss of downs and put it back where the previous play started. So if it was a 70 yd pass on 1st down that was fumbled through the end zone, give it back to the offense and it should be 2nd down at their 30. This rule doesn’t seem all that punitive though if it was fumbled through the back of the end zone from the opponents 1yd line.

Seems pretty punitive when, if the ball just went out of bounds on the other side of the pylon, it would be first and goal. It’s just extra stupid because it penalizes players for trying to make awesome plays (e.g. Pig diving for the pylon).

don't hate that idea either that way it rewards the D by not having a TD scored on them but doesn't totally screw the offense

I don't see a reason to punish at all. Guy fumbles on the 4, ball rolls to the 1 and stops, ball's placed on the 4 (at least in NFL). Ball rolls to the goal line, it's a touchback, so ball's lost to the other team, and moved out to the 20. Makes no sense to me.

Team picks up a turnover for doing nothing, because the other team fumbled. If not for the end zone, a team would have to recover that fumble to change possession. They're given a freebie for no reason.
