Not much can be determined off a sample size of 3 years. Malzahn made it to a NC his first year while it took Saban more than 10 years to make a NC. It'll be interesting to see which coach/coaches take advantage when Saban retires. Smart/Fisher/Pruitt/Mullen seem to be the most likely candidates, but anything can happen

UGA had their best season in decades under Richt in his second year as well. UGA would have been in the playoffs most likely vs OSU and then faced the winner of Miami and USC/Iowa had they beat OSU. In 2007, TN kept UGA from a chance of the NC, had they played in the SECCG, winner goes to the NC.

Richt was certainly unlucky. Luck can make coaches like Chizik win championships and keep good coaches like Richt out of them. Still, if Richt could've kept his success and stopped playing down to opponents, then he'd still be coaching today. In 2017 his Miami team stomped ND and VT, but struggled with a bad FSU, GT, Virginia, and Pitt. Then they got stomped by Clemson and Wisconsin.

that is true, just part of the package, he was the best Miami coach since Coker, first major bowl for them as well since Coker. Thought he should have took a year off before jumping back in, Miami was elated to get him. Richt fell victim that hurt Holtz, Spurrier, etc in hiring their sons that wasn’t ready for prime time football gigs.

Bama Jr TE hits the portal leaving them with one recruited TE (they are moving a LB over for depth). I expect them to go all out for Gilbert and Washington.

To be honest, there’s a reason Wisconsin and Iowa and Notre Dame are filling the league’s need for tight ends. They get a body type and character, then build them physically and as a player. Gilbert and Washington just have a higher ceiling than most.

Saw both in the Opening. Gilbert is nice, but Washington looks like an absolute freak. Really sticks out. Dude is going to ruin some college teams.

I just can’t help remembering some clutch plays by Rivera and Stocker during Chaney’s last go-round. You have to know they know what’s about to happen.
