Fulmer is tennessee football to gerald. Afterall he's a 19-20 year old kid. All he knows is that phil has been here about as long as he's been alive. To some of those kids fulmer is tennessee football. That remark isn't surprising.

Unfortunate sense of history. There are some coaches that you could make that case:

Bobby Bowden is Florida St.
Bear Bryant is Alabama
Bobby Dodd is Georgia Tech
Joe Paterno is Penn St.

But Phil is definitely not in that category.

I find college sports "fans" to mostly be focused on entertainment during the games and bragging rights from wins. This team is providing neither of those. Until that happens again the diversity of the fanbase will show through on message boards like this one. When it does happen most likely the board will be full of unified appreciation for the team and its players (see the posts during the last three basketball season for an example).

Exactly.

It would be a little different if the kid grew up in-state and was a lifetime fan but he's not.

I'm not surprised by it at all.

Coaches getting millions to win at top schools and who don't produce, deserve criticism. This is a bigtime entertainment business--not for the meek.
