Leather or fabric upholstery can benefit from an application of extra protection from dirt and body oils. That said, the areas of wear need cleaning as recommended by the upholstery manufacturer, not the furniture warehouse. Note, I skipped the furniture manufacturer entirely .. their recommendation should be that of the upholstery maker.
Now, THAT said, some manufacturers, or warehouses sell a 'warranty' where they apply a "better than Scotchgard" protectant and then your upholstery is warranted against several calamaties.
Me and the wife have bought several rooms of good, not great, quality furniture for our two kids living away while working on advanced degrees (We'll pay you back, honest we will). We chose not to buy the coverage.
If your buying high quality furniture without a special order fabric, I'd read the warranties fine print carefully and compare with just homeowners insurance rider if your insurer has one. If your paying the big bucks for fine furniture, I would get the furniture and it's upholstery insured, period. Winding up with an ugly stain or tear that costs several hundreds to repair vs the store bought onetime coverage, or a homeowner's policy rider make coverage quite attractive. Your call based on the value of the furniture your buying and the cost of the coverage. The super duper spray is fluff and lasts only through a few cleanings anyway. You'll have to reapply the manufacturers recommended protection anyway.
