To be fair, Pruitt was one of (if not the) hottest coordinators in the country. He was very highly regarded as a coordinator. He wasn't a BAD choice by resume as a coordinator. When we struck out on head coaches, Pruitt wasn't a bad choice. But did he translate well as a head coach? Not at all. He was in over his head.At the time, with the choices available, most pundits thought Fulmer made the best hire possible. Curry was going to hire Schiano and it was met which such opposition it got him fired. Curry was totally incompetent.

To be fair....they didn't all have that immediate success. Sarkisian walked into an amazing situation at Texas. It's hard NOT to win at Texas, especially as we went into the NIL era. Kiffin has been more successful at Ole Miss after Saban. Smart passed on many jobs until the absolute ideal situation at his alma mater. Curry was gonna hire Mike Leach which would have been much better than Pruitt. Also, Curry hired Tony V, so he was not incompetent. At the time, with the choices available, most pundits thought Fulmer made the best hire possible. I agree on him being barred for life for sure.Maybe Curry would have made a better hire and maybe not. I am not a fan of Fulmer anymore at all. But in all honesty, can you really blame him for hiring Pruitt? I mean other DCs have been hired and found success. And Pruitt was an elite DC at multiple schools. You have to think that hardly anyone would have wanted the job here. We were literally at rock bottom.
As far as the pushed for the AD job behind the scenes? I don’t know about that. Maybe he did. I do agree that he shouldn’t have been hired as the AD. I blame the ones above Fulmer more than Fulmer himself. Although I don’t ever want Fulmer around this football program again. He should be barred for life.
Agree Leach would have been a much better hire than PruittCurrie had every opportunity to make a better hire, but he mismanaged the search more than any AD at any school I can think of. Not the Schiano disaster, but he fell for the Gundy nonsense, then got publicly rejected by the coaches at Purdue and NC State. And for whatever reason, he went rogue and refused to tell his bosses where he was.
The funny thing is, if he had just gone straight to Leach after the Schiano debacle, Leach likely would have been the hire and Currie would most likely still be here.
Harbaugh and Sandusky want you to hold their beers.Has any college football coach in history been subpoenaed more frequently than Phillip Fulmer? There may be one. One of you may know. I am just not aware of it.
Resume, perhaps. But there is no way that Fulmer should not have picked up on the lack of intelligence that Pruitt possesses in the interview. Fulmer should have known that the job would be too big for Pruitt. To be fair, Pruitt was one of (if not the) hottest coordinators in the country. He was very highly regarded as a coordinator. Hating a guy who brought your school it's only unanimous national championship is wildFulmer should be held accountable for what he did to this program. He pushed for the AD job behind the scenes and then screwed it up. I have no doubt Curry would have made a better hire than Fulmer. I've been a Vol fan since the 60' s , I'm not as high on Fulmer as many are.
And we lost our best offensive player and OC. That QB they had was good enough to beat a Florida team that only lost to the two teams in the championship game.Florida State lost their starting QB. You are really sharp, your name says so.
We also didn’t have Cutcliffe for the championship game. Breaking in a first time playcaller who wasn’t old enough to run for president in the national championship game was less than ideal. Add to that we were missing our best offensive player, and I’d say them having to start the guy who beat a top 10 Florida team is pretty equal.QB is a much bigger loss. Outzen was 3rd stringer for FL State. Not his fault, but he was horrible.
Not just that, he won the SEC as a player, a position coach, a coordinator, and as a head coach. Won the only natty any of us will ever see. Had the best run against Bama that we have seen since Neyland. Even his bad run as AD saw him retain Barnes when UCLA came calling and offering a lot of money. This good run we are having really started under Fulmer as AD. And even the disaster that was Jeremy Pruitt didn’t keep us down for very long.Hating a guy who brought your school it's only unanimous national championship is wild
