ESPN - Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer defends career, denies firing rumors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Phillip Fulmer spent a lot of time Tuesday defending himself and dismissing speculation about his job security.

Fulmer said at Tennessee's weekly media day that most of the talk about his job being on the line has been "misinformation," though he said he doesn't bother paying attention to much of it.

"In the short term here, it's not where anybody wants it to be, starting with me," he said. "I'm just going to go to work and do the very, very best that I can for the Tennessee people, the Tennessee family, the administration and whoever."

No really surprising information, just shooting down the rumors.

Although, somebody could make something out of him saying, "that most of the talk about his job being on the line has been 'misinformation'".

How would he know that people are even meeting about his job status or not. I mean, I can't name one person that has ever been fired that was asked their opinion on whether they should be fired or not. Doesn't float with me.

Fulmer didn't really say it like that at the press conference, and Chris Low is making quite a jump to say he denied the rumors of his firing. Bad journalism here.

Hamilton said a decision would not be made till after the season. He didn't want to jump on a bad decision by making changes mid-season.

IMO, the season is already lost and firing him now wouldn't make that big of a difference, he is already a lame-duck coach.

Here's the rest of it- fyi. I feel like he's- again- using excuses ("age of instant gratification and what have you done lately") to cover for his poor coaching. We have never asked for instant gratification. I think 9 years is a respectable amount of time to expect a little more on the field.

"We're in the age of instant gratification and what have you done lately. I understand that," Fulmer said. "Hopefully we can give everyone good encouragement about winning and what we're going to do in the future, with how we play."

Playing is based on coaching, if you are coached well-you will play well and execute. If you are coached poorly-you will play poorly and not execute. This has been the case all season and a few others prior to this one. It is the coaches responsibility to ensure his other coaches and players are very well prepared for the game, and are well rehearsed for the plays and game plan.

This has not been the case for quite sometime.

Ok, I'll show some respect. I'll show these guys where to park at his house.

Heard bits of this on ESPN radio last night as a promo for the game on The Deuce.
