KNOXVILLE -- Tennessee football coach Phillip said highly touted freshman cornerback Eric Berry is considered a starter and is "a starter in our nickel package."
Translation: Berry likely won't start Saturday's season opener at No. 12 California if the Vols line up in their traditional 4-3-base defense.

Berry must be one heck of a corner for phil to name him a starter.I hope they don't leave him alone to much saturday.I can't remember the last true freshman cornerback that started for us?

Being included in the nickel package does not make someone a starter. Nice spin, Phil.

I thought about starting a new thread about Berry, but I'll just post here. To me, Berry fits into the same kind of mold as Deon Grant and Dale Carter. A big playmaker DB can literally change the course of a season in one play. Grant did it against Florida in 98 and against against FSU in the title game. Had he not made the pick against UF, they likely kick a field goal and win it. With a guy like Berry, any pass beyond 10 yards is risky at best. Any given play can become a TD-for the defense. If he stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if he had that kind of impact-this season.

I think that he has a point...Berry is not a starter for the game unless he is on the field for the first play, no? If they open in the nickel, then he starts. That is the only way he can truly be considered a starter from day one. It doesn't matter much to me. He will get ample time at CB on Saturday and will likely be starting over Gaines by the USM game if he has a good day in Berkeley.

No big deal, but I posted this link a few days ago. It doesn't matter if Berry starts anyways. Unless he gets hurt, he will play most of the game anyways.

I'm not refuting his point. However, if you're familiar at all with Vol423, you'd realize that he rarely ever misses an opportunity to bash Fulmer in any sort of way. Hence why you see the word predictable at the beginning of my post.

I'm not familiar with Vol423's bashing of Fulmer...but I figured that was why you said what you did.
