for the record Legion Field in B'ham had the checkerboard end zones in 1961 and you can find the photo of the Bear leaning against the goalposts and Billy Neighbors running by him!
Doug Dickey brought the checker boards to Tennessee in 1964!

But it is true that the General used to exhort his backs to run to the checkerboards on top of Ayers Hall atop the hill which was visible from the field!

I found this picture from 1964. I think there are some older with the checkerboards. I'll keep looking.

Your 1964 photo fits the timeline. I think that was the first year the upper deck west side was used.
I was a student in 63 or so when one morning after parking in what was then called the "JUNGLE", and making my way to the student center I was witness to a bulldozer with a steel cable attached around the press box which jerked that old press box off the top of the stadium. It crashed to the ground in a puff of smoke. I wonder if that is the way it would have been done today. Anyway, that made way for the new west side upper deck addition so your 1964 date with the checkerboard end zones is good.

on further review, I have to stand corrected. Everything I find says the west side upper deck was in place in 1962.
