Fulmer Backers

first, the way this thread started off, it sounded like a 1st timer at an AA meeting...."hi, i'm Mr. Rockytop, and i am a fulmerite."

i think most fans were on the fence about CPF. there's some loyalty for a lot of us to a guy that truly has done a lot for this university and it's football program.

but, there was also this nagging thing called results that just haven't been that good lately. losing season. bowl losses. loses to FL, GA, Bama, SC, Vandy.....all in the last couple of years. a renewed losing streak to FL.

and not to mention the lack of an SEC title in almost a decade.

add to that, the presumed "rise" of programs like USC, KY, Bama, and FL, LSU separating themselves....you have to look at the current landscape and say..."where exactly are we in this big picture?".

and yesterday.....we all got a big answer to that question.

the gap is widening, it's now evident. no one knows how this season will turn out, but it's literally on the edge of a cliff and could go either way. the optimist says we can finish 10-2. and yes, that is still a possibility.

the realist in me says, 8-4 would probalby be good considering.

and that just isn't good enough.

the oldest form of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

well, my friend, we are now at the point where something different is in order.

so, to CPF, i say thank you. you have been great for the program, and have enjoyed watching your teams compete. your record over Bama will never be forgotten, and the 1st half of your career will always be looked on as one of the most successful times in TN football history. you have a street named after you, and you have two conf. rings and a NT ring. thank you again.

but it's now obvious that our program isn't at the level it needs to be and it's time to change directions.

and last night was just a big fat dose of reality, that most of us already knew, but it was confirmed, in emphatic fashion, last night.

Jake you hit the nail on the head. It's not about Phil's passion for the program, if that was the case I would be coaching. It's about the results and yesterday showed me how far we have fallen behind. Hopefully Phil steps down because I don't want to embarrass him or his family, after all he is still one of us...

Fulmer is not going anywhere. Get used to it. If he leaves, he will have to resign, he wont be fired. The football season is over, look forward to basketball. At least the basketball program has a coach with some backbone and enough energy to get his players fired up. Those guys would run through a wall for Coach Pearl. That is what our football program needs. Sadly, its years away.

I have supported Fulmer and Chavis for a long time but I can't anymore. He has been at UT since 1992 and he won a championship in 1998 but that was 10 years ago and its time for renewed life into the program. Thanks Fulmer for the run and memories but it is time to go and take Chavis with you. As Vol fans we are sick of seeing UT finish in the Top 10 in recruiting and when it comes to the field we barely finish in the Top 25. The only reason we finish in the Top 25 is b/c of the talent we have b/c if it came to coaching we would lose a lot more than we win b/c CPF and Chavis get outcoached almost in every game unless we are playing Michigan. I'm tired of the national sportstalk personalities talking about Tennessee as mediocre and on a decline. It is time to get some new blood in here like Tedford and make our football team a team on the rise again. I hate to see Ainge being a senior and playing this great and have no chance to win a game b/c our defense not being able to stop anyone. I'm 27 and in the 22 years that I can remember of TN football I hav never seen a UT defense as bad as these last 2 years. Thanks for the memories Phil but we got to let you go.

i give in. fire him.

i've said nothing but good things about CPF for a long time now, and even i've had enough. fire phillip fulmer.

UT IE 95 will be along shortly.

Oh man, I can't wait for him/her to bless us with their brilliance.

We are 3 games into a season. I will look at the body of the season before casting judgement. 10-2 would be a great season - albeit unlikely but possible.

Those calling for an immdiate coaching change are displaying their lack of football knowledge. Bowl bids are not handed out after game three for a reason.

No point in posting for a few days until the 12-18 year olds, trollers, and those previously banned (TVA) settle down. Not much rational discussion in that group.

I'll be at the rest of our home games cheering with 100k+ in Neyland. See you Vol fans there.

I'm with you IE.

And I'm happy to see the 100,000 dwindle. It will free up some tix for some new blood in the stands too. Don't let the turnstiles hit you on the way out.

I'll be there Saturday too, but I want a coaching change. I've looked at the "body of work" since 2001 and came to that conclusion a few years ago. I applaud your optimism, the world needs that at times, but it is grossly misplaced in this situation. How well do you think our defense will handle Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and yes, KY? I will always hope for a win, but I've learned to lower my expectations.

It's sad to see what's happened to this team. It wasn't long ago when someone asked if we would win a game and I would look at them like something landed on their face. Even if we were the underdog, I believed that the team was talented enough to make breaks and capitalize on them. Now....not so much.

The fact that people (ourselves included) wonder if we can beat Arkansas State says everything.

Just curious, but were you one of the ones that still wasn't sold on Tebow? Or were you one of the ones that said that Urban's offense wouldn't work in the SEC?

Nope...ya got the wrong dude. I was the one who was wrong about the Cal O helping our young team prepare for UF. But I've already admitted my mistake. I think Tebow is a bad boy...as is Meyer.

But thanx for calling me out w/o knowing what the heck yer talking about smart guy. Try not to look like a fool next time...but from what I've read of yers so far, that may be difficult for ya.

Guys,

I love Phil Fulmer and respect what he has done over the past 15 years, BUT, I am almost over to the dark side of not wanting him back in 2008. I can accept losing, but I can't stand the lack of a running game, a F damn minus in special teams play, and unsound defensive schemes, like Ryan Karl covering Percy Harvin.

IE, I am not saying to fire him during the season b/c that is not right. I think he should have the opportunity to right the ship and has earned the opportunity but with his last few years of coaching and the way the defense looks this season, I don't think he will finish any better than 8-4 and that is not good enough. I love Fulmer as a coach but his philosopy is obviously not working anymore. I f we don't finish well, let him resign and give him a honorable way out

how, pray tell, do you define opportunity

My biggest fear now is the remaining time that we are going to have to suffer... and the impact it will have on the subsequent seasons.

Completely disgregarding the coaching situation (even though I don't know how you can), the impact elsewhere on subsequent seasons is what I'm worried about. I'm at work, and kept coming back to this thread numerous times before I could finish, so I might have glanced over this - but I'm worried about future recruiting classes. We all know that recruiting hasn't been a problem to this point (generally speaking), but how much more of this can we take before we just don't have the talent coming to us?

I nearly started crying when I checked out the AP & ESPN polls today and saw that Kentucky was ranked.

Its only a matter of time that he gets thrown under the bus. He has thrown virtually everyone else and has no one else to blame anymore.

this is a valid point. when he made all the changes two years ago on the staff the one thing i took from that was that those were all his guys. that he would sink or swim with those changes. if it worked out, he'd look like a hero. if not, there's no one else to look to but CPF.

in year two of the experiment, i think i'm a lot further away from calling him a hero than i ever thought i would.

phil got lucky last year that swain and meachem could make tacklers miss on those short comeback routes and use their breakaway speed to make it to the endzone.

I said that after the game. Meachem broke 2 big plays that were pretty much the same short yard passes we are seeing this year. Swain I think had a TD that went downfield, but for the most part, I don't think Cut trusts letting Ainge throw downfield.
