AD Hamilton confirms a contract extension and raises are in the works for the football staff...

tfpOnline:Raises and other stuff
Contract extensions and raises are in the works for Tennessee’s football coaching staff after the 9-3 regular season.

"It’s a reasonable expectation that contract extensions will be in play for our coaches," athletic director Mike Hamilton said. "That’s both the head coach and the assistant coaches."

Phillip Fulmer’s current contract, worth more than $2 million per year, runs through the 2011 season. Coordinators David Cutcliffe and John Chavis are in the first years of two-year deals worth about $300,000 annually. All other position coaches work on oneyear agreements.

Changes are expected to be announced soon after Tennessee’s Outback Bowl against Penn State on New Year’s Day.

"If we provide some raise dollars to be available for assistant coaches," Hamilton said, "Phillip then allocates that."

This morning marks the Vols’ final practice in town before they reconvene Christmas night in Tampa, Fla.

Walter Fisher likely won’t play in the Outback Bowl and is expected to have surgery on his right shoulder in early 2007, Fulmer said Tuesday.

Thursday is a critical day for injured cornerback Inquoris Johnson. He will undergo reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota on his right brachial plexus, a network of nerves from the spinal cord that controls muscle movements and sensation in the shoulder, arm and hand.

"They are going to try to do what they can, to the best of their abilities, to give him normal function back and get him to have the nerves in a better functional state than they are," UT head trainer Jason McVeigh said.

Penn State defensive tackle Ed Johnson, who started all 12 games this season, has been suspended for the Outback Bowl for a violation of team rules.

Johnson had five sacks this year. Senior Steve Roach is expected to replace him

UT cornerback Marsalous Johnson’s Tuesday court date in Putnam County was reset for March 22. Johnson remains charged with misdemeanor simple assault stemming from his arrest this summer. An off-duty police officer said Johnson waved a pellet gun at him during a traffic dispute.

I'd like to see our AD send a message to the coaching staff and re-negotiate the contracts granting $ incentives per performance. A little carrot would'nt hurt anyone, just handing out salaries without titles year after year bums me some.:zeitung_lesen:

I like Fulmer and think he did a good job this year. That being said, I don't think he had a year worthy of a raise. Particularly not a discussion of a raise when there's still football to be played.

I don't have a problem with an extension or raise since this helps recruits to know that the coaches will likely be around for the next four years after they sign. What I have a problem is the resulting extension of the buyout clause. What happens if we go 5-6 next year? People will again say the 4 to 5 million buyout is prohibitive to replacing the coach.

The Bowl season brings in extra cash which a part of the raise is normally also distributed to coaching staff via raises. So some reward for job done but not a great job. So, raises, if any, should be in line with average season.

This is how ALL schools do business. Nothing earth shattering about this. If UT wins the piece of pie will be bigger for all. Every coach who has a team in a New Years bowl and many who have teams in a bowl period will get raises. Not saying it's good or bad but that is the way things are done.

unbelievable. You can have a mediocre season and still get a raise and an extension...... Talk about a sweet deal......

How about a one time bonus, and save contract extentions until after next yr. for CPF?

Exactly . . .

it has nothing to do with being a "negavol". Raises should be based upon performance. If I graded out at 75% in my job i would not receive a raise.

Real CEO's of major corporations do not receive raises when the corp has a mediocre year. In fact they often get fired.

You NegaVols just cant accept reality. Take for instance Houston Nutt in Arky. He has had 2 losing seasons in a row and this year a 10 win season (his very 1st at Arky) and has won something like 1 or 2 bowl games. He will get a raise and extension. It is the way business is done. Like it or not. "Feel" good about it or not. It is what it is.

Actually, that's one thing I've never quite understood about coaches' contracts. I understand raises, but I've never quite gotten why they are always extending contracts year after year after year. I'm not saying they should let coaches get into the final year of their contract before granting extensions, but it seems to me that an awful lot of schools are always put in situations where buyouts tie their hands when things go badly.

I wonder If CPF will give me gas money to see us in Tampa, you know with the raise and all he would have plenty left.

Houston Nutt is not our problem. CPF deserves a bonus for improving this season and back to a bowl (the whole staff does) but IMO contract extentions should not be discussed 1 season removed from a losing season.

if the vols where 10 and 2 right now... i would not object to a raise. please remember that Fulmer is making well over 2 mil a year....

but the vols are not 10 and 2.......... but i think that the raise issue transcends football.

Question....

so every year that the Vols go 9 and 3 and go to a bowl game Phil and his staff deserve raises?????

Fulmer doesn't deserve a raise, period. You are rewarding him for having a terrible season last year and bouncing back and having a decent one this year. What sort of precedent does this set? If anyone deserves a raise, it's Cutcliffe and Trooper. Call me a negavol or whatever you wish. I don't see rewarding someone for doing what's expected of them. I do see rewarding someone for going above and beyond expectations, hence Cutcliffe and Trooper.

Patrick I think your point is well taken, but saying that 9-3 is mediocre . . . yet 10-2 deserves a raise is a little hard for me to get my head around. By that standard, there would be about 8-10 coaches a year that get raises.

There are some staff positions that might deserve raises (Trooper IMO does after the turn around in WR's).
